'The Muppets' Movie Logo Revealed?

Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs held a special presentation to select groups of voyagers on board the maiden voyage of the Disney Dream, previewing some of Walt Disney Motion Pictures upcoming projects. One of the slides gives us a peek into what might be the logo for the upcoming The Muppets feature film. This also suggests that Disney is keeping The Muppets title and not converting to The Muppets Movie, something which was being internally discussed in the marketing department.

The photo was published by the Disney news site Stitch Kingdom.

Mia Wasikowska in Talks For 'Stoker,' From 'Oldboy' Director Park Chan-wook

For those who pleaded for a new 'real' movie from Oldboy director Park Chan-wook when we recently talked about his short film shot on the iPhone, here you go. We heard about Stoker last year — the film is scripted by Wentworth Miller under the pseudonym Ted Foulke, and is described as such: "After the death of her father, a teenager must deal with a mysterious uncle who returns to spend time with the family."

Last year Park Chan-wook was attached to direct with Carey Mulligan in the lead and Jodie Foster in a key supporting role. Now both actresses have moved on, but it looks like Mia Wasikowska will have the lead when the film shoots this spring.

Deadline has the news but doesn't go into detail about the departures of Mulligan and Foster. Scheduling is likely at the root of both. Carey Mulligan is soon doing Shame with Michael Fassbender and Steve McQueen, and is tapped to play Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's new version of The Great Gatsby, should that actually move forward. And before Jodie Foster works with Neill Blomkamp on Elysium this summer, she has Roman Polanski's God of Carnage booked, and likely has to devote serious time to repping her directorial effort The Beaver when Summit releases the film in late March and early April.

No bad comment on this project, then, through the fact that both have moved on. I'm rooting for Park Chan-wook here. Stoker will be his English-language debut, and that's a hurdle that many a director has struggled to clear. I'd be happy to see him continue to work exclusively in South Korea, but understand the impulse to jump to a US production. Fox Searchlight and Scott Free are backing the film, so he's certainly got good support.

Mike Mills' 'Beginners' Trailer Starring Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer and Mélanie Laurent

Mike Mills is a famous New York graphic artist who designed promotional material and album covers for such acts as Beastie Boys, Beck, Sonic Youth, and Ol' Dirty Bastard. He moved on to directing music videos for such artists as Moby, Yoko Ono and Air, and became a very successful commercial director. Mills made his feature directorial debut in 2005 with a big screen adaptation of Thumbsucker, a novel by Walter Kirn. The film was met with moderately positive reviews, but was considered a disappointment by those who had been following Mills' short films (watch one of my favorite of his short films, Architecture of Reassurance).

His second feature film, Beginners, premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. The movie is an independent drama about a young man (played by Ewan McGregor) who "is rocked by two announcements from his elderly father: that he has terminal cancer, and that he has a young male lover." Christopher Plummer plays Oliver's father Hal, and Inglourious Basterd's Mélanie Laurent plays a young French actress whom he meets at a costume party and develops a relationship. I screened the film at TIFF this year but for some reason or another didn't write a proper review for the site. I can tell you that this film is both well made and touching. Great performances, but a less-than-mainstream plot. I especially love the more quirky touches, like montages that Mills uses to express a sense of year and time (which you'll see in the trailer). Watch the trailer embedded after the jump. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Focus Features is releasing the movie on June 3rd 2011.

'The Guard' - 'Hot Fuzz' Plus 'In Bruges' Equals Funnier Than Both [Sundance Review]

The Guard, which was picked up at Sundance by Sony Pictures Classics, is one of those movies you're going to be quoting and turning your friends on to. Though it seems pretty surface based on a general description, once you see it, you realize it's a truly special movie complete with humor, action, heart and one of the most memorable characters in recent years. That character, Sergeant Gerry Boyle played by Brendan Gleeson, is sort of Bad Lieutenant Light. He's got plenty of bad habits – drinks on the job, says horrible things – but is actually a decent guy and great cop. Put that character in the middle of a simple murder mystery, co-starring Don Cheadle and Mark Strong, written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, and you've got one of the best movies at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Once Gleeson's character is established, with his thick Gaelic accent, he and a new Guard – which basically another name for police officers – discover a very mysterious murder. That murder ends up tying into a massive drug case FBI Agent Wendell Everett (Cheadle) has come to Ireland to investigate. The two become unlikely friends and help each other track down the bad guys, including the leader played by the always awesome Mark Strong.

The actual story of The Guard isn't what makes it special. What makes it special are its award-worthy screenplay, which is filled with hilarious asides and biting banter, the performances – Gleeson in particular – and the perfect good cop, bad cop chemistry between Cheadle and Gleeson. When apart, each is a very unique and interesting person, but when they're together, they bring out the best in each other – both in the world of the movie and as actors. There's also a touching subplot about Boyle and his mother, played by Fionnula Flanagan, who you know as Eloise Hawking from Lost. All of these complement themselves perfectly in this tight, 90-minute film.

Reminiscent of the early works of Guy Ritchie, but with a more grounded filmmaking style, The Guard easily places itself in the same breath as other crime thrillers from the region – Snatch, In Bruges, Hot Fuzz, etc. It's a film that will be one of your favorites of the year and also remain in your heart for years to come.

/Film Rating – 9 out of 10.
