Will a Successful 'Logan's Run' Let Nicolas Winding Refn Direct 'Wonder Woman'?

Briefly: It was a little over a year ago that we heard that Drive and Bronson director Nicolas Winding Refn would like to make a film featuring the long-running DC Comics character Wonder Woman. He has talked about the project here and there, saying that he thinks Drive co-star Christina Hendricks would make a perfect Wonder Woman. But DC and Warner Bros. have not extended any offer to him to make the film.

At the Empire Big Screen festival this past weekend, The Playlist recorded Refn talking about the idea of a Wonder Woman movie. And it sounds as if the success of Logan's Run, which he is making at Warners with Wonder Woman producer Joel Silver, could directly impact his chances.

The director said, "I would love to make 'Wonder Woman.' And I also think that Christina Hendricks would be the perfect Wonder Woman, but Warner Bros haven't called yet. But I'm getting closer with 'Logan's Run.' I think someone said to me in a meeting that if I get 'Logan's Run' right, then I'll get 'Wonder Woman.'"

Before Logan's Run happens, however, Refn will make the Thai western Only God Forgives, with Drive star Ryan Gosling. Then he and Gosling will move on to Logan's Run. So any possible Nicolas Winding Refn Wonder Woman film is a couple years out, at least.

Plug

In the wake of ditching her action role in the third Transformers movie Megan Fox appears to be turning her hand to comedy, with some big name funny films on the horizon.
Writer and director Judd Apatow has confirmed that Fox has signed up for his next film, a spin-off sequel to his smash hit Knocked Up, however he is keeping quiet about the role he has given her. The sexy starlet is also due to star alongside Bridesmaids' Kristen Wiig in comedy Friends with Kids, due out later this year.
Critics have speculated as to whether the glamorous star will be able to handle the humility needed for good comedy, but fans have hit back, saying that Megan has always had an impulsive, fun-loving attitude.
Megan has not always been the feisty serious heroin, having shown a more playful side to her personality through modelling work as well as films. In 2009 she set pulses racing with a raunchy but casual photo shoot encouraging fans to buy Converse trainers (and who wouldn't if you had a girlfriend like Megan to give them to?).

David Fincher Says '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' Likely to Be 70% CG

David Fincher is a forward-thinking kind of guy. In the '90s, when digital effects were still relatively young, he put CGI to work in Alien 3, and heavily used digital images to journey through the brain (and the apartment) of Tyler Durden in Fight Club. He has embraced digital cinematography and the various benefits it provides, and employed such extensive CGI work on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button that the skinny version of young Steve Rogers in Captain America is referred to by many as the Ben Button version of Chris Evans.

So it is no surprise to hear that he would be interested in performance capture, and that his version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea might be primarily created in computer workstations. We've known of his attachment to the project for a few months, but other than the fact that it will be 3D, we haven't heard much from the director at all about his Jules Verne adaptation/remake. But at a Q&A not long ago, he mentioned the project briefly, and those comments are after the break.

At an Actors Studio Q&A at the Swedish Film Institute, David Fincher was asked by /Film reader Viktor J (who sent us this clip) about his possible interest in doing a motion-capture or performance-capture film. The director said,

I would love to to something like that. I would love to do something probably more like Avatar than Tintin. I like the idea of something that is a little more… complicated. (chuckles) I love the idea of a 'cartoon', but I would like it to be sort of very, very dense. And, in fact, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea will be probably 70% CG. [...] I love motion capture and think it's only in its infancy, and eventually there won't be a difference between motion capture and acting. because that's all motion capture is, is being able to capture acting.

Here's the clip. Fincher's comments start about forty seconds in. Watch the whole thing for his account of meeting Daniel Craig on the set of Tintin, which Craig has already recounted as an embarrassing moment.

Thanks to Viktor for sending this along.

'Harry Potter' Writing/Directing Team Steve Kloves & David Yates Reunite For Stephen King's 'The Stand'

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is the biggest movie of the year, with a $1.1 billion-dollar take worldwide. We've known for years that Warner Bros. was anxious about this point in time because, without Potter, what will the studio be able to rely upon as a guaranteed cash cow? And with the afterglow of that billion-buck figure starting to fade like the taillights of a truck hauling off WB's money-printing press, it is time to take action.

The action is this: put director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves, the architects of Potter's success, together on a new project. Something big. Something sprawling enough to generate a couple movies. Something like Stephen King's own thousand-page viral outbreak, end of the world, showdown-between-good-and-evil doorstop The Stand. I think it's a great idea. Will the moviegoing public? That remains to be seen.

HitFix has the report; this is only partially new, as David Yates has been talking about the possibility of directing The Stand (currently positioned as a multi-film adaptation) for a couple months. But having Steve Kloves on board is a great step in the right direction. He did a great job cutting the Potter novels down into film-size chunks. If they both sign, as HitFix says they are poised to do, it's probably our best hope for getting a good couple of movies out of The Stand. Or it's the first step towards our best hope; we still have to see who'll end up in the cast.

(This is as good a place as any to acknowledge that the Mick Garris TV miniseries, now streaming on Netflix, has set a good benchmark for casting in some respects. Gary Sinise, for example, was great as Stu Redman, the East Texas guy who survives an apocalyptic viral outbreak and eventually leads the forces of good, more or less, against the powerful agent of chaos Randall Flagg. Miguel Ferrer was a solid Lloyd Henreid and Matt Frewer an inspired choice for damaged weirdo the Trashcan Man.)

The obvious question is: will the films that result from this deal be rated R? The TV miniseries did some things very right, but mid-'90s network TV wasn't really the place for a story that involves death and destruction on levels both broad and intimate as seen in The Stand.

First Look: 'A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas'

It's been three years in real time since we last caught up with stoner buds Harold & Kumar (in 2008′s Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay) but it's been six years of time within the movies since the two friends played by Kal Penn and John Cho last spent time together. Their third film, and their first in 3D (and first outright holiday movie) sees the pair reunited and, judging by the looks on their faces, back in trouble.

The first full official image of the pair and persistent scene-stealer Neil Patrick Harris is after the break.

A lower-quality version of this image has been floating around for a couple weeks (scanned by The Playlist from EW) but here's the official digital version via Yahoo. Click to enlarge slightly.

After years of growing apart, Harold Lee and Kumar Patel have replaced each other with new friends and are preparing for their respective Yuletide celebrations. But when a mysterious package mistakenly arrives at Kumar's door on Christmas Eve, his attempt to redirect it to Harold's house ends with the "high grade" contents — and Harold's father-in-law's prize Christmas tree — going up in smoke. With his in-laws out of the house for the day, Harold decides to cover his tracks, rather than come clean. Reluctantly embarking on another ill-advised journey with Kumar through New York City, their search for the perfect replacement tree takes them through party heaven — and almost blows Christmas Eve sky high.

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas stars John Cho, Kal Penn, Paula Garces, Eddie Kaye Thomas, David Krumholtz, Danneel Harris, Amir Blumenfeld, David Burtka, Fred Melamed, Patton Oswalt, Richard Riehle, Danny Trejo, Neil Patrick Harris, Bobby Lee, and Thomas Lennon.

H&K creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg wrote, but this time directing duties went to Todd Strauss-Schulson. The film hits on November 4.
