J.J. Abrams Talks 'Star Wars Episode VII:' "There Are Infinitely More Questions Than Answers Right Now"

J.J. AbramsJ.J. Abrams

In the coming months J.J. Abrams is going to have a very interesting perspective on the eternal geek debate of Star Trek vs. Star Wars. He is (figuratively) helming both the U.S.S. Enterprise in this year's Star Trek Into Darkness and an X-Wing Fighter (or something) in Star Wars Episode VII. With the former coming out in just a few short months, the director will soon be turning his full attention to a galaxy far, far away. In addition, he'll be pressed to talk about it while promoting the new Trek.

In one of his first major interviews leading up to the release of the May 17 Trek sequel, Abrams spoke to Empire Magazine about his frame of mind and approach to Star Wars. He says he's approaching it from a place of excitement and passion and also admitted Steven Spielberg was one of the primary reasons for him taking the job. Read his quotes below.

Thanks to Empire Online for these quotes which, if not exactly enlightening, are at least interesting. First up, he was asked about his approach to the film.

I don't know because we're just getting started. So it's a great question that I hope I'll have a good answer to when I know what the answer is. There are infinitely more questions than answers right now, but to me, they're not that dissimilar. Though I came at these both from very different places, where they both meet is a place of 'Ooh, that's really exciting.' And even though I was never a Star Trek fan, I felt like there was a version of it that would make me excited, that I would think 'that's cool, that feels right, I actually would want to see that.

How we were going to get there, what the choices were going to be, who was going to be in it – all of those things I knew would have to be figured out, but it was all based on a foundation of this indescribable, guttural passion for something that could be. It's a similar feeling that I have with Star Wars. I feel like I can identify a hunger for what I would want to see again and that is an incredibly exciting place to begin a project. The movies, the worlds could not be more different but that feeling that there's something amazing here is the thing that they share.

He then spoke about his change of heart. Abrams, of course, first publicly turned down the job.

My knee-jerk reaction was that I'm in the middle of working on the Star Trek movie and I can't even consider it. But then time went by and I got further along working on the movie and getting to a place where I had done most of the heavy lifting. So when I met with Kathy Kennedy we just started discussing it and I was able to actually engage in the conversation. I went down to tell Katie, my wife, and I said 'I had just a very interesting conversation with Kathy.' That was the beginning. I will say that Steven [Spielberg] was very encouraging of Star Wars. It's funny because I talked to him about it and it turned out he knew all about what was going on.

Star Trek Into Darkness opens May 17 in North America while Star Wars Episode VII is tentatively scheduled for 2015. Though, from the above quotes, that sounds like a bit of a stretch, does it not? What do you think?

'You're Next' Teaser Posters: Menacing Animal Faces Promise Dire Terror

You're Next hallwayYou're Next hallway

In 2011, one of the hits of TIFF and Fantastic Fest was Adam Wingard's home invasion thriller You're Next. The film drew raves at just a couple of festival screenings and was snapped up by LionsGate. But rather than releasing the film quickly, the studio held on to it for a while. After appearing once at Fantastic Fest in September 2011, the film was dormant until just over a week ago, when it played at SXSW.

Now You're Next has a release set for August 23 this year, and we've got the first wave of new promo materials for the film. The movie is built around a family reunion at a semi-remote mansion, and observes as a group of masked intruders attacks the family with murderous intent. The opening promo salvo is a set of teaser posters that show off the masks, and that give a sense of the dire atmosphere that pervades much of the film.

I got to see You're Next at SXSW and had a great time with the movie. Sharni Vinson is incredibly energetic and forceful as the lead character, and there is a blend of humor and overt violence that many films try to capture. Few succeed in the way this one does.

The first trailer for You're Next hits on Thursday, March 28th.  The film also stars AJ Bowen, Amy Seimetz, Barbara Crampton, Wendy Glenn, Margaret Laney, Rob Moran, Joe Swanberg, Nicholas Tucci, and Ti West.

A fresh twist on home-invasion horror. A gang of masked murderers descend upon a family reunion, and the victims seem trapped…until an unlikely guest proves to be the most talented killer of all.

Robert Redford Could Join 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'

Robert RedfordRobert Redford

One of the most recognizable actors in the world could soon become a part of the Marvel Universe. Robert Redford is in discussions to join the cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier as a senior S.H.I.E.L.D. official. He'd star along Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson in the Joe and Anthony Russo directed film out April 4, 2014.

Deadline broke the news of the casting, which is surprising considering Redford has spend the better part of the past decade (or three) directing his own movies and championing independent film at the Sundance Film Festival.

Recently, Russ did a great piece on how the Marvel casting process works and, according to Deadline, even Redford isn't exactly immune. If he signs, he would be contracted to appear in future Marvel projects, which could include The Avengers 2, the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show or any number of other projects Marvel has in the works. None of those are confirmed, but the fact that his contract would include multiple pictures is.

In The Avengers it seemed like Nick Fury was the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. so Redford's casting suggest either that was a lie or, after the events of the film, the government has hired someone more malleable above him. They'll certainly need it to deal with characters played by Frank Grillo, Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie.

Written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will the third film of Marvel's Phase Two and last sequel before The Avengers 2. Guardians of the Galaxy has the honor of leading directly into that film.

Help Kickstart a Documentary About 'Arrested Development'

Arrested Development documentaryArrested Development documentary

It's been a long, strange ride for Arrested Development fans. The show suffered from painfully low ratings the whole time it was actually airing on Fox, but since its cancellation in 2006 has become popular enough to inspire Netflix to bring the series back from the dead. Now we're just a couple of months away from the fourth season, which is pretty crazy if you think about it.

Documenting that journey have been Neil Lieberman and Jeff Smith, two self-described superfans keen on raising "awareness of this brilliant, witty and original comedy that is like nothing else." To that end, the pair spent five years criss-crossing the country to talk to the cast, crew, and fans of the series.

The film is now finished, but needs a bit more funding before it can get distribution. (So much for there always being money in the banana stand.) Hit the jump to hear Lieberman and Smith's Kickstarter plea.

As the duo explain in their pitch video, they're seeking cash to help cover some of the licensing costs. And what better way to celebrate the imminent return of the series than by contributing to a documentary about it?

As of today, the pair have earned about 60% of their $20K goal, with 26 days left to go. Those interested in donating — whether at the $5 "Gobias" donor level or the $5,353 "I Just Blue Myself" one — can find more information on Kickstarter.
