Big Roles For Newcomers: Kathryn Bigelow Picks Her Osama Bin Laden; Atom Egoyan Finds Damien Echols

If I needed to I could come up with two films more different than Kathryn Bigelow's "kill Osama Bin Laden" movie Zero Dark Thirty and Atom Egoyan's West Memphis Three drama Devil's Knot. But for the sake of argument let's note that despite being fiction based in truth, they're still pretty seriously different projects. Both films do have one other thing in common, in that they will rely on relative unknowns for pivotal roles.

First, Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty, which recounts the successful attempt to kill Osama Bin Laden, will actually feature an actor as the terrorist figurehead — something we weren't sure about at one point. Ricky Sekhon, a British actor with some TV experience, will play the part. He's already shot the role, according to Baz Bamigoye.

The film is still shooting, however, with a December 19th opening planned. The cast also features Chris Pratt, Kyle Chandler, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Ehle, Joel Edgerton, Nash Edgerton, Frank Grillo, Harold Perrineau Jr., Mark Duplass, Jason Clarke, Mark Strong, Edgar Ramirez , and more.

After the break, Atom Egoyan has chosen a newcomer to play Damien Echols, one of the convicted West Memphis Three.

Variety reports that Atom Egoyan found a Nebraska Wesleyan University drama student, James Hamrick, to play Echols. The trade says that the actor made a tape as part of his audition for the role, and that he beat many other actors, including many name talents, for the part.

He'll be in good company as the film, based on Mara Leveritt's book Devil's Knot, follows private detective Ron Lax (Colin Firth), who agreed to work pro bono for the West Memphis Three — the three young men accused of murdering three 8-year old boys in 1993. The West Memphis Three were released from jail last year after being convicted of the murders in 1994.

The film also features Alessandro Nivola as Terry Hobbs, the stepfather of one of the victims, who has been thought by some to be the real killer. And Reese Witherspoon, Mireille Enos, Collette Wolfe, Kris Polaha, and Kristopher Higgins are in the cast as well. Amy Ryan and Dane DeHaan are in talks to join.

Sequel Bits: 'The Expendables 2,' 'Captain America 2,' 'Jay and Silent Bob,' 'Taken 2′

Lots of odds and ends today in Sequel Bits. Here we go:

  • It seems a video game based on The Expendables 2 will be coming out.
  • Dominic Cooper isn't sure if Howard Stark will return in Captain America 2.
  • 20th Century Fox is sending out a great Taken 2 Father's Day card.
  • Kevin Smith promises Jay and Silent Bob's animated film will be rolled out in 2013.

The Expendables 2 opens August 17 and with a cast including Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme, who isn't going to want to live in that world? It seems video games fans could get that chance. Though Ubisoft, the company likely developing the game, has no comment, a recent find at Player Attack (via Cinemablend) reveals the Australian Classification Board has given some kind of game based on the film a 15+ rating citing "strong violence."

Will it be a high graphics, first person shooter where you can play through multiple missions as your favorite action hero of all time? Not likely. Games like that cost a lot of money and are marketed well before release to raise interest. More than likely, it's some sort of simple online or mobile shooter. But we can dare to dream.

This quote ran in Thursday's Superhero Bits but it's worth running again for a new audience. Dominic Cooper, speaking to Collider about his role in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, revealed he had yet to be contacted about reappearing as Howard Stark in Captain America 2:

I just don't know. That one probably, because I'm the father, the next one I imagine will come later. But you never know, anything can happen to any of the characters at any time. They're like the comics. But I don't know. They're incredible projects.

Coming Soon posted this funny Taken 2 Father's Day card. It's pretty self-explanatory. The film will be released October 5.

'Pitch Perfect' Trailer: Anna Kendrick in the A Capella 'Bring it On'

Anna Kendrick stars in Pitch Perfect as an outsider girl who, after arriving at her new school, is pulled into a competitive group of girls who are determined to sing their way to all-vocal a capella success. But don't be too quick to call this one merely a revamp of other similar competitive high school/college movies. Because after watching the trailer below, you'll see that this is a lot like… oh. An a capella version of Bring It On.

But, that said, there's a lot in this trailer that suggests Pitch Perfect knows how silly the premise is. Thanks to assistance from minor Bridesmaids scene-stealer Rebel Wilson, a script written by 30 Rock writer Kay Cannon, and a healthy dose of Glee-esque performance, there might be something pretty funny here.

The comedy is actually based on a non-fiction book, but I expect scenes like the weird shower trio were invented for the film. And they look like they might even work.

Yahoo has the trailer. Pitch Perfect opens on October 5.

Beca is that girl who'd rather listen to what's coming out of her headphones than what's coming out of you. Arriving at her new college, she finds herself not right for any clique but somehow is muscled into one that she never would have picked on her own: alongside mean girls, sweet girls and weird girls whose only thing in common is how good they sound when they sing together.

When Beca takes this acoustic singing group out of their world of traditional arrangements and perfect harmonies into all-new mash-ups, they fight to climb their way to the top of the cutthroat world of college "a cappella." This could wind up either the coolest thing they'll ever do or the most insane, and it will probably be a little of both.

This Week In Trailers: Shadow Dancer, Kotoko, After The World Ended, Nostalgia, Canicula, Step Up To The Plate (Entre Les Bras), The Will

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they're seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I'm operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers?

Kotoko Trailer

I absolutely dare you to figure this out without reading a synopsis.

What immediately jumped out at me was how much of a departure this is for director Shin'ya Tsukamoto, the man who last gave us Tetsuo: The Bullet Man. Long gone are the hideous physical transformations, his Kafka-esque metamorphosis still something to behold,  and replaced with something more cerebral, intelligent.

We open easily enough with a woman suffering with double vision. The hook here, though, and it's brilliantly encapsulated within mere seconds, is that she seems to be suffering from a psychological double vision as well. The way the guy just lumbers and leaps is contrasted nicely with the hushed tones of our protagonist who realizes it is in her head and throws us the first in a series of thrilling moments which, in this case, is her devotion to augmenting her reality in order to stave off the terror that surely comes over her.

The festival recognition is well placed and timed in the way it doesn't take us out of trying to understand what's afoot here but the rub isn't that a kind, stately narrator will explain everything you need to know. In fact, things just spiral deeper out of control down a well of madness, but, for me, I am riveted by what I see. Almost like a wobbly can that is just moments away from coming loose of its moorings, the trailer just descends into dark places as the echoing sounds of gunshots fi

'The Babymakers' Trailer - Broken Lizard is Back, Sort Of

It's been three years since Broken Lizard's last film, The Slammin' Salmon, and six years since their last semi-hit, Beerfest, but the comedy group is coming back this summer with a fresh new feature. Well, kinda. The Babymakers isn't technically a Broken Lizard film — while troupe leader Jay Chandrasekhar directs, not all the team members appear, and the ones that do play supporting roles to non-Lizard stars Paul Schneider and Olivia Munn. Still, I'm betting fans will be happy to see at least a partial reunion, and the premise of the film sounds right up their alley.

Written by Peter Gaulke and Gerry Swallow, The Babymakers centers around a married couple (Schneider and Munn) trying for their first child. When it becomes apparent that husband Tommy is shooting blanks, however, he enlists the aid of his friends in breaking into a sperm bank to retrieve a deposit he made several years ago. Kevin Heffernan, Nat Faxon, Wood Harris, M.C. Gainey, and Aisha Tyler also star. Watch the first trailer after the jump.

[via First Showing]

Head to Apple.com to see Schneider's semen-related shenanigans in crisp HD.

This trailer really doesn't do anything for me. To be fair, I haven't found any of Broken Lizard's works to be more than fitfully amusing, so maybe this just doesn't appeal to my personal sense of humor. But for all their flaws, Beerfest and Super Troopers offered some big laughs; the Babymakers trailer barely got me to crack a smile. The only highlight for me was the appearance of Chandrasekhar, whose deeply silly side role seems to liven up the proceedings.

The Babymakers premiered at SXSW to mixed reviews, with critics by and large approving of Schneider's performance and complaining about Munn's casting. THR found it to be Broken Lizard's "most mature, funniest entry," while Film School Rejects sniffed that "the whole enterprise is essentially demeaning to everyone involved with it." You can make up your own mind when The Babymakers gets a theatrical and VOD release on August 3.
