Sequel Bits: 'Lord of the Rings' Hobbit Reunion, Star Trek Sequel Not Called 'Star Trek 2,' 'Independence Day' Sequel Talk, 'Dark Knight Rises' Won't Occupy Wall Street

You'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't like one of the following four movies: The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Independence Day or Batman. Odds are everyone likes at least one of those films (or film series), probably very passionately in fact. And if that's the case, you'll definitely want to hit the jump on this story. After the jump we've got information on the following:

  • Empire Magazine has an exclusive video of Sean Astin, Elijah Wood, Domenic Monaghan and Billy Boyd reuniting on the 10th anniversary of the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
  • Access Hollywood is reporting the sequel to J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek will not be simply called Star Trek 2.
  • Roland Emmerich is at it again, saying he's talked to Will Smith about coming back for Independence Day 2.
  • Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises won't film at Occupy Wall Street as production hits the Big Apple.

It's hard to believe a full decade is about to pass since the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Where were you when you saw that movie? Probably in a whole other place in your life. That's certainly the case for Elijah Wood (Frodo), Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee), Billy Boyd (Pippin) and Dominic Monaghan (Merry), the four hobbit stars of all three films. Wood is coming back for The Hobbit but Empire Magazine got the four of them back together for an article discussing the film on its 10 year anniversary. The full article will be in the new issue but here's a sneak peek video.

Zoe Saldana spoke to Access Hollywood at a recent Los Angeles event and confirmed not only her excitement to film the sequel to Star Trek, but that none of the cast have seen a script yet. The article then threw in an aside that the title won't be Star Trek 2. Not that we ever really thought it would be. Here's the excerpt:

"I know it's gonna be amazing. We still haven't gotten a script yet," she said of progress on the film, which Access has confirmed with a source will begin shooting in mid-January, and won't be called "Star Trek 2." "We're very excited to read it and get back into space."

Odds are it'll be some sort of subtitle just so Abrams and crew can keep with the Star Trek lexicon.

Next up, Roland Emmerich has probably been talking about doing a sequel for Independence Day since July 4, 1996. It's at a point where most people don't even ask him, especially with the huge amount of projects he already has on his plate. The question came up, however, in an interview with the Ohio State University college newspaper The Lantern and he said the script is being written and original cast members, including Will Smith, have been contacted:

We've talked to him, but naturally he wants to see a script, which I totally understand.

He then told the reporter to "hold tight. It's happening soon." Hold tight, but don't hold your breath on that one.

Finally, last week rumors spread that Christopher Nolan might use the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City as a backdrop for massive crowd scenes in The Dark Knight Rises. Not the case says Entertainment Weekly. They won't be shooting at that park at all.
