Weeds Session: Six Months Later Itâs Weird Beards, Ms. Pac-Man, Alanis Morrisette, and The General Lee. Where Were (Are) We?
How long has it been since the last Weeds Session? Six months? Full Disclosure: We've been hesitant to turn on our television for fear of the sixth season of Entourage; seriously, that is the most dreadful show of the year. Doug Ellin might as well DM Tommy Wiseau to write and direct the next planned 10 seasons. Back to Weeds, a far better series that remains impossible to peg like a bi-polar, medium infatuation. Over the last three eps (and yes: half a year later) Nancy Botwin, her ever-independent sons (Silas and Yung Perv Eyes), and the slimy Esteban have struggled with myriad crises. This season's earlier, recurring and grisly theme that is life-is-cheap below the border has been replaced by the soap-operatic lightness displayed in the first seasons.
#SpoilerAlert: The stakes in Nancy's life, though still perma-dire, seem to have cooled. New additions tend to do that. And sure, the current tone is unrealistic, given that she's in-and-out of bed and hot water with a politician aka a corrupt jackass and control-freak. But Single Mom and Slacker-in-Law vs. Mexico? Fuck it. It's summer and we're digging it. You? And Andy. Andy! The guy who inexplicably transformed for two eps into the would-be hirsute Billy Mitchell of Cali; at one point we anticipated him parading around and waking-and-baking in Daisy Dukes. But wait. Is that all $100K buys in this shite economy? Really? It doesn't even buy a Comic-Con hotel cosplay orgy? (Nevertheless, nice shout out and timing, Stephen Falk and Co.)
After the jump, the latest developments from the preceding eps and last Monday's "A Distinctive Horn." Be sure to ready your angriest, limpest /TV comments trolls, so the /Interns can zap 'em and stay busy!
Nancy: The Blood-Spattered Non-Bride
When Esteban was first introduced, we couldn't help but slither into our couch at his very name. That's not racist. That's a side effect to being obsessed with Michael Parks's Esteban Vihaio in Kill Bill V.2. And as season six progresses, we can't help but picture Nancy as The Blood-Spattered Non-Bride. The appearance two eps back of "The Rosemary's Baby room" spiked it home: Esteban, and his shady puta boss (pictured above), wanted her out of the picture, thus keeping the demon spawn, Esteban's heir, to themselves. Just like Bill without the closet fetish.
And while some critics, like Vulture's Emma Pearse, contend that Esteban is the character that is now "out of the picture" after Nancy pummeled his chest, we have reason to doubt it. Moreover, I'm not sure I follow Nancy's ballsy plan to dismiss him point-blank from the baby's life. Actually, I'm categorically sure I don't follow. Not that Nancy ever plans accordingly, but surrounding Esteban's son with a Jewish welcome, a painful snip, and plenty of snark is not a worthy deterrent for a black-market kingpin. We totally anticipate a kidnapping or a set-up. Re: On either end.
Which begs the question: why doesn't Nancy–a drug game vet herself—own a slew of firearms and/or samurai swords by now? The gun range calls. But will Conrad? Finally? Ever? One thing is certain: fans are increasingly vocal for his return and the show-makers can't dismiss this. But for now, Nancy's gotta protect her cub on the lonesome. Andy's days as a Dennis Hopper-looking bear ended Monday night. Upside: His Pussy Wagon aka The General Lee is apparently sticking around.

Disneyâs Rapunzel: Five Concept Art Images
Disney Animation has released five new concept art photos for their 2010 animated film Rapunzel. As with most concept art, the pieces are absolutely beautiful. Hopefully the new non-photorealistic rendering technique employed on this production will help capture some of the painting-like beauty of these pieces. Four more images after the jump.
Directed by Byron Howard & Nathan Greno (the co-director and head of story on Bolt respectively), this new telling of the classic fairy tale, will transport audiences "to a stunning CG fantasy world complete with the iconic tower, an evil witch, a gallant hero and, of course, the mysterious girl with the long golden tresses. Expect adventure, heart, humor, and hair, lots of hair." The voice cast is rumored to include David Schwimmer, Matthew Gary Gubler, Kristin Chenoweth, Dan Fogler, and Grey DeLisle. Rapunzel is scheduled to hit theaters in Christmas 2010.
Previous director Glen Keane developed a new look for this computer animated film, which is said to look and feel more like a traditional hand-drawn Disney Classic, but in 3D. Apparently the film uses a non-photorealistic rendering technique which will make the surface look like it is painted but still containing depth and dimensions. The movie's visual style is being based on French Rococo artist Jean-Honore Fragonard's painting "The Swing". You can definitely see the look they're going for in the image above.
There are a couple more very small concept drawings over on the Animations message board, but you really can't see much of anything. A short clip of test footage was shown at Siggraph 2005, where is gained a lot of attention. Earlier concept images had been previously posted online from when the project was titled Rapunzel Unbraided. But the project has since been completely revamped. See more concept art here. And some might recall we posted a scanned magazine photo from the film a few weeks back.

Nacho Vigalondoâs Sci-Fi Video Game Comedy Gangland
Steve Zaillian and Mandate Pictures will produce Nacho Vigalondo's comedy Gangland. Almost everyone I know has raved about Nacho's feature directorial debut Timecrimes (which I have still yet to see, despite it being a time travel story), and you may have seen some of Vigalondo's short films previously on this site (check out Choque if you have a few minutes).
Gangland is based on an original idea from Nacho, and is being co-written by Pat Healy, an actor turned screenwriter who was involved in several episodes of HBO's In Treatment and has had two scripts end up on the annual Black List. According to THR, the story follows a team of video game developers who "get in over their heads after they promise to deliver the most realistic game of all time, titled 'Gangland,' and soon find themselves having to survive by their own wits in a real-life criminal underworld."
Sounds like a cool sci-fi concept, almost the opposite of the upcoming Neveldine/Taylor film Gamer, where video gamers control real life prisoners in a real world battle. Also, I should remind you that the film is said to be a comedy, a fact mentioned in the first sentence of this story, but could be easily overlooked.
Zaillian is already producing an English-language remake of Timecrimes for United Artists/MGM. Sony Pictures has first look deal with Zaillian's Film Rites, so many expect the project will probably end up at Sony.
Judd Apatow Signs Three Picture Deal With Universal; How Much Money Will Funny Make?
I can't tell you much about Judd Apatow's new film project, but I do know for sure that his next three films will begin with the Universal Pictures logo. Apatow has just inked a deal with Universal for his next three films as director.
Even though Apatow has produced films for other companies, he has never directed a film outside of the Universal City-based studio.
Apatow's latest, Funny People, hits theaters this Friday and no one in Hollywood has any idea how popular the film might be. I have talked to quite a few people who has seen the movie, and their opinions are as across the board as they come - from absolutely hated it to best movie of the year. The lengthy running time is bound to turn some people off, while others might be upset with the bait and switch (the film is more of a drama about funny people than a comedy — not to say it doesn't have a lot of laughs). I'm expecting to like it quite a bit as I enjoyed an early draft of the screenplay (although it seems like the third act problems might not have been fixed during production).
Early trailers played up the illness storyline, while later trailers don't even make mention of the story's inciting incident, and some outlets have been questioning why Universal isn't marketing the film in outdoor advertising as a new Adam Sandler film (still not as worse as The Weinstein Company keeping Seth Rogen off the billboard ads for Zack and Miri Make a Porno… At least Sandler appears in photo). Analysts are predicting anywhere from $20 million to $35 million for the film's opening.

Jason Reitmanâs Up In The Air to Premiere at 2009 Toronto Film Festival
Jason Reitman's new film, a big screen adaptation of Walter Kim's novel Up in the Air, will premiere at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.
I've been a huge fan of Reitman's work, ever since discovering his early short films (which I highly recommend). Up in the Air is probably the best script I've read in the past 3 or 4 years, and if it is any indication of the final product - [insert hyperbolic statement here]. The dramedy about corporate downsizing and business travel will screen at the Canadian film fest as a Premiere Gala selection. And if you couldn't tell from my excitement — yes, I'll be there.
The Toronto premiere isn't really much of a surprise, especially considering Reitman's twitter profile has featured the short blurb: "A brief chronicle of my attempt to finish my film in time for the Toronto Film Festival". While a release date has not yet been announced, I'm pretty sure the movie will hit theaters in November or December, much like Juno did a couple years ago. For those who don't remember, Juno also premiered in Toronto (with a sneak at Telluride).
Official Plot Synopsis follows:
"From Jason Reitman, the Oscar® nominated director of "Juno," comes a comedy called "Up in the Air" starring Oscar® winner George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizing expert whose cherished life on the road is threatened just as he is on the cusp of reaching ten million frequent flyer miles and just after he's met the frequent-traveler woman of his dreams."
Other newly announced films include Joe Dante's 3D family horror film The Hole, Amelie helmer Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Micmacs à tire-larigot, and Fatih Akin's Soul Kitchen. Head on over to Variety to read about some of the other films which were just added onto the line-up.
