'Cloud Atlas' Getting IMAX Release; First TV Spot Highlights Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Futuristic Chase Scenes

Given the sprawling scope and staggering ambition of the Andy and Lana Wachowski and Tom Tykwer's Cloud Atlas, it seems only appropriate that the movie open on some of the largest screens in the world. IMAX has announced that the epic saga will hit their super-sized screens next month, on the same day as Cloud Atlas' regular, non-IMAX release. It's worth pointing out, however, that Cloud Atlas was not shot in native IMAX but is being digitally remastered for the release.

Still, whether you plan to see it on the big screen or the extra-big one, Cloud Atlas looks like one of this fall's most intriguing offerings. To pique viewer interest, Warner Bros. has just unveiled the first TV spot for the movie. While the previously released extended and theatrical trailers underscored the movie's more emotional themes, the new 30-second spot cuts straight to the sci-fi action goodness. If it's tough to puzzle out what the movie's out by looking at the two previous trailers, it's damn near impossible to figure it out by watching this promo. A brief interaction between Tom Hanks and Halle Berry serves as the backbone of this spot, with quick, unexplained flashes of some of the film's other stars and other story arcs. It's tough to fault Warner Bros. for not getting the movie's entire message across in this video, though — the David Mitchell adaptation has way more story than can be accurately conveyed in 30 seconds.

What does come across loud and clear is critics' love for this film, thanks to glowing quotes from the likes of HitFix, First Showing, MSN Movies, and Entertainment Weekly. Laremy Legel, who reviewed the film for us from TIFF, wasn't among those quoted, but you can read his equally enthusiastic write up here.

Also starring Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Doona Bae, Hugh Grant, and Susan Sarandon, Cloud Atlas opens in IMAX and non-IMAX on October 26.

First Look: Jim Carrey As Colonel Stars in 'Kick-Ass 2â€²

When Jeff Wadlow cast Jim Carrey in Kick-Ass 2, the movie went from geek anticipated property to mainstream legitimate. Carrey plays Colonel Stars (above), one of the many, many superheroes inspired by the actions of Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson) and Hit-Girl (Chloe Moretz) in Matthew Vaughn's first film. He's the leader of Justice Forever, a superhero supergroup that Kick-Ass joins when Hit-Girl retires from the game. It's a pivotal role in the film and Carrey's interpretation of the major ass-kicker should be a sight to behold.

Kick-Ass 2 is currently filming aimed at a June 28, 2013 release and images of Carrey on set have leaked onto the internet. Check them out below.

In the Kick-Ass 2 comic book, written by Mark Millar and drawn by John Romita Jr., who co-created the characters, Colonel Stars is certainly a bigger guy. But Carrey fits much better into the film version of this series' world. Even Hit-Girl and Kick-Ass, while kids, look pretty intimidating in the comic books. In the movie, however, they look more goofy. It's likely in keeping with Matthew Vaughn's choice to have the heroes in the story look slightly more reaslistically wacky and weak that Carrey was cast. It'll make the eventual showdown with Red Mist/The Motherfucker (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and his hired thugs that much more intense.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they're seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week we have trailers that encourage you to get out into the sun, one that feels like Heat-lite, one that celebrates the glory that is women wearing yoga pants, and one that showcases a photographer who probably knows a lot about Bono.

I really wasn't a Depeche Mode fan in the 90′s. I know they were the hip band to like, right up there with the Gollum led band, Midnight Oil, but my tastes ranged a little more urban. However, the video for "Personal Jesus" opened my eyes about what a music video could be.

So began my affinity for all things Corbijn. 2007′s Control was on point and my only wish is that the guy keep churning out work. This trailer seems to take a more musical bent, hell, it opens with Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box" so it's already couched in a musical vein but the man is a master at capturing brilliant imagery and showing you why stars are just that.

I will admit that while filmmaker Klaartje Quirijns' expose on the man who seems like the highest paid photographer to the stars, and who appears to be borderline miserable every waking hour of the day based on the clips that we're shown, the trailer is a bit uneven in tone. Literally. While it's great to have a soundtrack that features Depeche Mode, U2, Nirvana and other notable notables, there doesn't seem to be much thought given to how aurally how that all needs to flow.
