'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2′ Panel: Kristen Stewart Vs. A Mountain Lion [Comic-Con 2012]
In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, you will see Kristen Stewart wrestle with a mountain lion. She also jumps waterfalls in a single bound, climbs mountains and hugs Robert Pattinson really hard. At the first Hall H panel of San Diego Comic Con 2012, director Bill Condon (via video) and the cast and crew of the November 16th film screen the first seven minutes of the movie, most of which centers on Bella's first time acting like a vampire. "It felt so good to break her in," Stewart said of this films' newly vamped character character. "See how fast the car goes."

The footage begins just as the first movie ends. Bella's red eyes open and she begins to look around. She can see incredibly well. The dots in the ink on the wall, plants in bloom, etc.. She then sees Edward, ahhh, Edward, walks up to him and the first words of the film – fittingly – are "So beautiful." She then pulls him in for a hug and, because she's now vampire strong, hurts him a bit. It got big laughs from the crowd.
The pair then go for a vampire walk in the woods. Which means they run super duper fast and jump really, really far and stare at each other in slow-mo. It doesn't look particularly good, but the movie is still a few months out.
Bella and Edward stop and see a deer. In the Twilight lore we know that the Cullen family doesn't like to kill humans, they hunt animals, so Edward seems to be teaching Bella this. But she smells something. It's a human, rock climbing nearby, and he's cut himself. She darts off towards the smell of the blood, races up a mountain face, hot and bothered for human blood but Edward stops her. She jumps off the mountain to go back to the deer.
Unfortunately the deer has another hunter now too: a mountain lion. Bella and the lion both go for the deer, jump and – in mid air – Bella tackles the lion. The pair wrestles. Bella gains control and chomps on the throat of the lion. Yes. This happens.
Fully nourished, the couple goes back to the Cullen house and encounter Jacob (insert wild girls screaming). He explains that before Bella can see her daughter she should go with Jacob. Why? Bella will soon learn about their eternal love. Instead she just smells his wolfness, makes a joke and the footage ends as they go into the house to meet Renesmee.
Later, a second scene was shown where vampire Bella tries to "learn to be human" to fool her father. Cause, as a vampire, you don't have to breath, blink or anything like that. So it's a humorous little snipped.
The panel itself was the typical Twilight Comic-Con nonsense. Lots of screaming, even some cheers for the "final panel" announcement, lots of repeated dumb questions, sexual innuendo, Taylor Launter's chest hair, the full checklist.
But honestly, I think Breaking Dawn Part 2 might be the best film yet. Simple because it just looks so batty and ridiculous.

Alex Proyas to Script and Direct Hellboy Creator's 'Joe Golem And The Drowning City'
The last Alex Proyas film, Paradise Lost, came apart at the seams before it really got moving, thanks to budget issues that made the production unfeasible in the eyes of the Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. beancounters, and technological hurdles that got in the way of realizing the film's ambitious sci-fi vision of battles in Heaven.
But Proyas now has another film project coming together, and it is one that also lives in the realm of the fantastic. The property is Joe Golem And The Drowning City, a graphic novel by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, and Christopher Golden.
The graphic novel follows "an orphaned teenage girl, an aging magician, a lunatic scientist, a Victorian occult detective, and the stalwart sidekick, Joe Golem—a man whose strange dreams hint of a history he has forgotten–as they struggle for the fate of an alternate 1970s lower Manhattan." So that sounds pretty alright.
Deadline says that Proyas will script and direct the film, and that like Paradise Lost the film will shoot in Australia.
And lest you wonder about the practical problems of creating Manhattan in Australia, this story's version of the island is very different from the one we know. Mignola and Golden imagined an alternate Manhattan, where a massive earthquake caused the lower half of the city to sink into the water, turning the affected area into something that resembles Venice.
Amazon describes the source novel like so:
In 1925, earthquakes and a rising sea level left Lower Manhattan submerged under more than thirty feet of water, so that its residents began to call it the Drowning City. Those unwilling to abandon their homes created a new life on streets turned to canals and in buildings whose first three stories were underwater. Fifty years have passed since then, and the Drowning City is full of scavengers and water rats, poor people trying to eke out an existence, and those too proud or stubborn to be defeated by circumstance.
Among them are fourteen-year-old Molly McHugh and her friend and employer, Felix Orlov. Once upon a time Orlov the Conjuror was a celebrated stage magician, but now he is an old man, a psychic medium, contacting the spirits of the departed for the grieving loved ones left behind. When a seance goes horribly wrong, Felix Orlov is abducted by strange men wearing gas masks and rubber suits, and Molly soon finds herself on the run.
Her flight will lead her into the company of a mysterious man, and his stalwart sidekick, Joe Golem, whose own past is a mystery to him, but who walks his own dreams as a man of stone and clay, brought to life for the sole purpose of hunting witches.
Proyas has also been linked to Gods of Egypt and The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag. We don't know which film might really be his next. Constantin Film picked up the Joe Golem rights, which set this particular one in motion, but the timeframe the company envisions for the project is unclear.

'Attack the Block' Director to Make 'Rust' Graphic Novel Adaptation
Attack the Block director (and The Adventures of Tintin co-writer) Joe Cornish is one of a couple young filmmakers that Fox has latched on to. Another is Josh Trank, just set to direct Fantastic Four. At the same time as Fox announced that it would move forward with a Josh Trank-directed Fantastic Four, and that a new director is needed for Daredevil, there's news that Cornish has been set to direct an adaptation of the graphic novel Rust: Visitor in the Field.
The original story is by Royden Lepp, with Aline Brosh McKenna scripting based on Lepp's graphic novel. The story follows a family whose lives are changed when a jetpack-wearing boy crashes into their barn while being chased by a giant old war robot.
Here's a description of Rust:
Rust is a high-octane adventure set in the prairie lands of an unknown time. Life on the Taylor family farm was difficult enough before Jet Jones crashes into the barn, chased by a giant decommissioned war robot! Oldest son Roman Taylor struggles to keep his family's small farm afloat as the area heals from a devastating world war. While the rest of his family may not trust the mysterious boy with the jetpack, Roman believes the secrets of Jet's past may be the key to their survival.
I've seen comparisons that link Rust to E.T., and to The Rocketeer, and even to the movies of Hayao Miyazaki. I haven't read Rust, however, so I don't know how on point those are. Looking at pages of the graphic novel online, however, and via the iPad app, I'm impressed at what I see, and this might be one of the books I have to grab while at Comic Con. The storytelling seems to be done primarily through action and movement, rather than dialogue, and I can see how aspects of it might seem like perfect inspiration for a film. And with Cornish directing, it might be truly special.
