Mitch Glazer Talks Megan Fox
Screenwriter Mitch Glazer has forged an impressive career, with such diverse titles under his belt such as Scrooged, Great Expectations, and The Recruit. Like most writers, though, Mitch Glazer has also wanted to direct, and he finally makes his directorial debut with the drama Passion Play, a project which has been in the making for the past 20 years. Mitch Glazer originally wanted his wife Kelly Lynch to star as Lily, a circus performer who has large bird wings growing out of her back, along with his lifelong friend Mickey Rourke. Mickey Rourke stars as Nate Poole, a jazz musician who flees from a mobster (Bill Murray) when he finds a traveling circus and the lovely winged woman Lily, portrayed by Megan Fox.
You have been good friends with Mickey for years and your wife Kelly is in this as well. Can you talk about discovering Megan for this role and the things you brought out of her in this performance?
Mitch Glazer: Absolutely. I had never seen the Transformers films. When it first saw her pictures, I just went, 'My God. That's her!' The director of Jennifer's Body had shown me a few cut scenes together, because the movie hadn't come out yet, just so I could see what she looked like on screen. That was it, really. We had a lunch, she and I, and she read the script three or four times and was really connected to it already. There was a vulnerability to her aside from her beauty. It was a neighborhood restaurant that we eat at a lot and I've never seen paparazzi there. This poor woman, they followed her there, as a pack. We're eating and I look through the glass window and there are all these big guys out there taking photos of her. I realized that Megan's real life had prepared her for the role of a woman who is paid money for men to look at her in a glass box. She's already there, because of her beauty and celebrity, she was already an object, as Lily is. She was connected to the script in a lot of ways. She showed up, literally, fully formed. I don't even know if I know who Megan Fox is. I know Lily. She wrote me an email, days after leaving the set, saying, 'I miss Lily.' That's all she wrote, and I believed she did. It was a perfect fit between actress and part. I love her performance in it. I think it's really subtle and controlled and beautiful.

/Film Interview: 'X-Men: First Class' Director Matthew Vaughn
Matthew Vaughn is sick. Literally. On a Tuesday morning in late May, the director of the upcoming X-Men First Class called us from London with a case of tonsillitis. The timing couldn't be worse. Vaughn is about to release the biggest movie of his career, 20th Century Fox's summer superhero tentpole, X-Men First Class, a film that serves as both a prequel and reboot to a popular series of films that began in 2000 with Bryan Singer's X-Men. Starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as younger versions of Charles and Erik, who will grow up to be Professor X and Magneto respectively, the Sixties-set film tells the origin story of the X-Men infused with the exciting action and fantastic social conceits that make the X-Men great.
On top of that, the film is solid; an entertaining love letter to the X-Men franchise that's both a treat for fans but totally accessible to non-fans. Most of that is thanks to magnetic lead performances and a well-thought out screenplay that Vaughn co-wrote along with writing partner Jane Goldman and Thor writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz. X-Men First Class is up there with the best of the Singer X-Men movies and does its job so well that the franchise can go anywhere from here.
In our short 10-minute interview Vaughn talked about that, how he regretted not making X-Men: The Last Stand, how the insane profitability of Kick Ass (you read that right) could lead to Kick Ass 2 and much more. Check it out after the break.
/Film: Hey Matthew how are you.
Matthew Vaughn: Believe it or not I've got tonsillitis which I haven't had since I was a kid and it's painful.
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Especially coming into a movie opening, it's probably the worst possible time for that to happen.
Well, actually I've got a tradition of getting sick as soon as I finish a film and I only finished it last week so I think now that my body is sort of relaxing… there you are. Fire away.
You were up for X3 as well as Thor, what was it about X-Men First Class that finally made you decide to make a Marvel movie?
It was gonna happen. Immediately. X3 I didn't do purely because I was naïve enough back then to apply my low budget filmmaking experience and didn't think I'd have enough time to make the film I wanted to make. And since then I've made Kick Ass and Stardust so I have far more experience as a director. I was sort of kicking myself for not doing X3 and then what happened with Thor was I worked on the screenplay with Mark Protosevich and was beginning to start do concept work and stuff on it and then I realized that they weren't going to commit to making it as quickly as I would have hoped for. Ironically I've now made, in that time period, Kick Ass and X-Men First Class. And when Fox rang up saying are you interested in doing it, I had unfinished business after not doing X3 and I was actually more excited because for X3 I would have really had to follow the lead of X1 and X2 and the characters were mainly cast. I knew with X-Men First Class I could start fresh, get a new piece of canvas and paint what I wanted.
That leads into my next question. You're obviously coming into a franchise with four previous films and, though you are in a different time period and could recast, during production, how aware were you of those movies and how – if at all – did they affect what you were doing?
My main goal was to make as good a film that could stand on its own two feet regardless of all the other films. However I thought anything that worked in all the other movies, and I could have some fun with nodding towards, I would. But my main rule was, 'You know what, we're trying to reboot and start a whole new X-Men franchise' and therefore, making a film work on its own two feet was far more important than trying to be referential to the prior movies.
But those previous films, is that why you and the other screenwriters chose the characters that are in this movie as opposed to the line up that's in the original First Class comic?
That was already done for me. When I came aboard, the characters were already done and ironically I'd always wanted to do a Bond movie so I sort of thought I could have my cake and eat it too. I can do a Bond film and an X-Men movie at the same time. And I'd always liked political, Col

Stephen Fry Confirmed For 'The Hobbit,' Two More Roles Cast
We'll probably be hearing about minor casting for The Hobbit for months to come. We'll even hear about some major names — no one has yet been announced as the voice of the dragon Smaug, for example. This story is a good middle ground. The Master of Laketown may not be a huge character, but if he's played by Stephen Fry, things change a little bit. Straight from director Peter Jackson, we've got confirmation that Mr. Fry is in the film as well as info on two more newly-cast roles.
I can't really say it any better than Peter Jackson does, so I'll go to the casting portion of list latest missive to fans:
We are thrilled to confirm that Stephen Fry will be playing The Master of Laketown. I've known Stephen for several years, and we're developing a DAMBUSTERS movie together. In addition to his writing skills, he's a terrific actor and will create a very memorable Master for us.
The Master's conniving civil servant, Alfrid will be played by Ryan Gage. Ryan is a great young actor who we originally cast in a small role, but we liked him so much, we promoted him to the much larger Alfrid part.
Last, and certainly not least, is Conan Stevens, who will be playing an Orc called Azog (Orcs are never called Roger or Dennis for some strange reason). And yes that's his name—Conan! Isn't that cool? Azog is played by Conan! Here's a photo of Conan and I together… I'm pretty tall, probably at least 6'5″ or 6'6″ I would guess, so that gives you some clue how tall Conan is! You can learn all about him at www.conanstevens.com.
There's a bit more info from Peter Jackson's latest Facebook post, so check that out if you want everything he had to say. Here' s the photo he mentioned:

Steven Spielberg's 'The Adventures of Tintin' Teaser Trailer
Paramount Pictures has released the first teaser trailer for the Peter Jackson-produced Steven Spielberg-directed performance capture animated adaptation of The Adventures of Tintin.
I think its interesting that it doesn't become obvious that this is a computer animated film until about 30 seconds in. Its also interesting that the "Secret of the Unicorn" subtitle has been removed, but I guess The Adventures of Tintin is simpler and easier to sell (and they'll need all the help they can get to sell it in the US market). While Tintin is incredibly popular in international territories, the character is rather unknown in the states. And the problem with this teaser trailer is that it doesn't explain much — it doesn't explain who Tintin is.
At the teaser trailer stage, the performance capture computer rendered animation looks better than most of the Robert Zemeckis-helmed projects. I suppose this will play in 3D attached to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides later this week, as the framing seems to focus on some of the 3D aspects (plane crashing as it approaches the camera…etc). Even the subheading of the title is pushing the "in 3D" aspect of the release. So I'm very interested to see how this looks in 3D on the big screen.

'Napoleon Dynamite: The Animated Series' Trailer
Last May it was announced that 20th Century Fox was developing an animated television series based on the 2004 Fox Searchlight film Napoleon Dynamite. A year later, Fox has released the first trailer for the upcoming series, Napoleon Dynamite: The Animated Series. The one minute promo is only a teaser, as the series won't air until Midseason 2012. Looks pretty much like you would expect, the question is: Is it still funny or are they capitalizing on the popularity of the 2004 indie a little too late? Watch the promo trailer now embedded after the jump. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.
Trailer:
Creators/Executive Producers
- Jared Hess
- Jerusha Hess
- Mike Scully
Voice Cast
- Jon Heder as Napoleon Dynamite
- Aaron Ruell as Kip
- Efren Ramirez as Pedro
- Tina Majorino as Deb
- Sandy Martin as Grandma
- Jon Gries as Uncle Rico
- Diedrich Bader as Rex
Official Plot Info:
Based on the hit film, NAPOLEON DYNAMITE is an animated series that follows the continuing adventures of America's most awesome awkward teenager and his quirky family and friends as they struggle to navigate small-town life in rural Idaho.
The original cast from the film – Jon Heder, Aaron Ruell, Efren Ramirez, Tina Majorino, Sandy Martin, Jon Gries and Diedrich Bader – will voice their characters in the series, and many new characters will be added along the way.
NAPOLEON DYNAMITE (Heder) is a 16-year-old boy convinced – for no apparent reason – that he is destined for greatness and blessed with unlimited "sweet abilities." He spends his days practicing ninja moves, drawing ligers, soul dancing and bragging about his "girlfriend in Oklahoma" whom nobody has ever seen. Napoleon's brother, KIP (Ruell), is an unemployed 32-year-old who lives at home and believes he would be an amazing catch for any girl who would respond to his online come-ons. The Dynamite brothers live with GRANDMA (Martin), a crusty woman who can often be found four-wheeling with her lady friends at the local sand dunes.
Napoleon's allies include PEDRO (Ramirez), his unflappable best friend who has recently been elected class president; and DEB (Majorino), an incredibly sweet girl who sees the good in Napoleon and dreams of someday being his wife. Napoleon's UNCLE RICO (Gries) lives out of an orange custom van, where he obsesses over his botched high school football career and dreams up ways to become rich and famous. Then there's REX KWON DO (Bader), a self-proclaimed martial-arts master who runs the local dojo.
Guest voices in the debut season include Jennifer Coolidge ("American Pie," "Legally Blonde"), Sam Rockwell ("Choke") and Jemaine Clement ("Flight of the Conchords").
NAPOLEON DYNAMITE is a 20th Century Fox Television production. The series is created and executive-produced by Jared Hess and Jerusha Hess ("Napoleon Dynamite," "Nacho Libre"), along with Emmy Award-winning writer/producer Mike Scully (THE SIMPSONS, "Everybody Loves Raymond," "Parks & Recreation"). The animation house is Rough Draft Studios ("Futurama," "The Simpsons Movie").

Watch The Never Before Seen Original Ending of Alexander Payne's 'Election'
One of my favorite films of the 1990′s is Alexander Payne's brilliant dark comedy Election starring Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon.
For those of you who haven't seen the film, Broderick stars as a high school civics teacher named Jim McAllister who will not let the school's annoying overachieving honor student Tracy Flick (Witherspoon) run unopposed for student body president. He convinces popular varsity football player Paul Metzler (a breakout performance from Chris Klein) to run for president as well, and anything and everything that could go wrong, does go wrong. While the film did well critically (Witherspoon's performance was voted the 45th Greatest Movie Performances of All Time by Premiere Magazine, and the film was ranked at #9 on Entertainment Weekly's 50 Best High School Movies) and was even nominated for the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, I run into a lot of film fanatics who have never seen this film (if you're a member of this group, I strongly encourage you to rent or buy it).
I've watched the film countless times, and have even seen the movie three times on the big screen. I was surprised to learn that the film's ending was not what was originally intended/written/filmed. The DVD release of the movie contains no deleted ending, and in doing research for this post, I couldn't even find a reference to an alternate ending for this movie anywhere on the web. But it exists — /Film reader John G sent me a link to the six-minute original ending sequence, which had been recently uploaded to YouTube. This footage was reportedly discovered on an unlabeled VHS tape containing an early work print of the film, sold at a local flea market. Watch the sequence embedded after the jump.
Note: If it isn't already obvious, its probably not worth watching unless you've seen the movie (and yes, spoilers).
In this never-before-seen ending, Jim McAllister does not move to New York City and have a final encounter with Tracey while visiting Washington, DC. Instead, Mr. McAllister becomes a car salesman who gets a last-minute visit from Tracy before she leaves for college. This ending doesn't work, in every possible way, although I can see what Payne was going for (we even get another reference to trash, a visual motief spread throughout the film).
Apparently they screened the film with this ending and the conclusion tested horribly. I heard that they sat on this ending for almost a year, before deciding to reshoot the ending as a more cynical epilogue. The film is based on a novel by author Tom Perrotta, who also wrote the book and screenplay for Todd Field's oscar-nominated 2006 film Little Children. I had never read Perrotta's original novel, but it turns out it included the ending with Mr. M working in car dealership. While I much prefer the theatrical ending that was raptured in additional photography, I'm glad this version has ended up online for all to see. It goes to show you that sometimes art needs time to take shape, even in film. And yes, rarely, test screening prompted reshoots can result in a much better film.
And just in case you are unable to read what Jim write at the end of the scene (the VHS transfer is pretty crappy), here is an excerpt from the original screenplay:
CLOSE ON JIM He looks at the yearbook. He looks at Tracy. He looks out the windshield. It's all so odd. CLOSE ON THE BLANK PAGE JIM begins to write: "Dear Tracy,"
