'Dancing With The Stars' Winner Julianne Hough Lands Lead in 'Rock of Ages'
Country singer and two-time Dancing With The Stars winner Julianne Hough has just landed the lead role of Sherrie in Adam Shankman's adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages. She'll star alongside Tom Cruise and Mary J. Blige (as well as possibly Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin, though those deals haven't been locked yet) as a country girl who comes to Los Angeles and gets eaten up and spit out by the '80s hair metal scene. The show features music by Bon Jovi, Styx, Twisted Sister and Poison and more. Hough recently appeared in Burlesque and also stars in the upcoming remake of Footloose. Read more after the break.
In a story broken by The Wrap, Shankman (who directed Hairspray, another movie version of a Broadway musical) called Hough's audition "jaw-droppingly good" and said casting Hough was a "no-brainer."
In the film, Hough's character moves to Hollywood and becomes involved with Stacee Jaxx (Cruise), the world's biggest rock star, before losing everything and being forced to work her way back up. The screenplay was written by Chris D'Arienzo, who also wrote the Broadway show.
If the movie holds true to that show, which can still be seen touring across the world, some of the songs that might be included are as follows: Sister Christian, We Built This CIty, We're Not Gonna Take it, Wanted Dead or Alive, I Want To Know What Love Is, Here I Go Again, The Final Countdown, Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Every Rose Has Its Thorn and Don't Stop Believin' just to name a few.
Finally, just to keep things in the cheesy music/dance vibe, Hough won Dancing With The Stars as the professional dancer in seasons four and five with speed skater Apolo Ohno and Formula One Drive Hélio Castroneves. She's also had a #1 album on the Billboard country charts. So, she's a pretty legit choice to star in a big budget musical.
Are you fans of Hough and do you think she'll hold her own against Cruise, Blige, Brand and Baldwin?

'Legend Of The Fist: The Return Of Chen Zhen' Trailer
From Andrew Lau, the director of Infernal Affairs (which was remade into Best Picture winner The Departed), comes a brand new martial epic starring the legendary Donnie Yen. Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen is set to open April 22 and features pretty much anything you'd want in a martial arts film: huge battles and fast action wrapped around a period war story about mistaken identity and national pride. Read a mini-review of the film, the plot synopsis and, of course, see the brand new trailer after the jump.
We'll get this ball rolling with the brand new trailer. Check it out in HD over at Apple.
Next up, here's the official plot synopsis:
In 1925, the nation of China is divided by infighting, and Japan has become the most powerful force in Asia. With the city of Shanghai torn in half by international conflict, Club Casablanca has become a hotbed of spies, mobsters, English officials and the Japanese military- all looking to gain control of the country, with little regard for what happens to its citizenry. Into this den of intrigue enters Chen Zhen (Donnie Yen), who has returned to China after fighting alongside the Allied forces in Europe, bringing some dark secrets from his past along with him. During the day, he's known as "Qi", and appears to be just another wealthy playboy. But at night, he takes to the street as a masked warrior, determined to subvert the Japanese invasion while becoming entangled with the sultry Kiki (Played by Shu Qi), who has a dangerous secret of her own. When his past catches up to him, Zhen is faced with near impossible odds- but his skills are formidable, and he's up to the challenge.
Finally, this film premiered at Fantastic Fest 2010 and I was lucky enough to check it out. Here's a my mini-review from when I was at Collider:
Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen is a brand new Hong Kong martial arts epic set in the roaring Twenties. It stars legendary martial arts star Donnie Yen as Chen Zhen, a World War I hero who leaves his reputation in Europe by coming home and assuming the identity of a fallen comrade. Life doesn't change much for the Chinese after the war, though, and Chen Zhen is forced to become the Masked Warrior to inspire hope in his people by beating other people up. Filled with double crosses, incredible action and an intriguing political story line, Legend of the Fist is about as good as one can hope for when sitting down for a Hong Kong action film. But that's about it. It never falters, but after an excellent opening sequence, it never provides any moments of true awe. I mean, it ends with Chen Zhen fighting 100 guys in a dojo for crying out loud! And it's a war movie! We've seen it before and we'll see it again.

'Tron Uprising' Animated Series Trailer
Part of the whole plan with Tron: Legacy was to launch a multi-platform new franchise which would span the movies, potential sequels, video games, animated television projects and maybe even a theme park attraction.
The animated series Tron: Uprising voice cast includes Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, Nate Corddry, Lance Henriksen and Tron himself Bruce Boxleitner. It is directed by Charlie Bean, Joseph Kosinski and Sean Bailey, and is written by Tron: Legacy writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. The story is set between the original Tron and before Tron: Legacy.
The first trailer is included on the new Tron Legacy DVD/Blu-ray set. Watch it now embedded after the jump and please leave your thoughts in the comments below.
Here is a quick plot synopsis thanks to wikipedia:
Beck, a young program who becomes the unlikely leader of a revolution inside the computer world of The Grid. His mission is to free his home and friends from the reign of the villainous Clu 2 and his henchman General Tesler. Beck will be trained by Tron – the greatest warrior the Grid has ever known. Tron will not only teach Beck the fighting skills he needs to challenge this brutal military occupation, but will be a guide and mentor to him as he grows beyond his youthful, impulsive nature into a courageous, powerful leader. Destined to become the new protector of the system, Beck adopts Tron's persona and becomes the archenemy of Tesler and his oppressive forces.
Tron: Uprising will begin airing on Disney XD (which I'm told is the Disney Channel's answer for boy programing) during the Summer of 2012, after a a 10-part micro-series this Fall.

Diane Lane Cast As Martha Kent in 'Superman'
Not too long ago, we heard that Kevin Costner was in talks to play Jonathan "Pa" Kent in Zack Snyder's Superman film. Today, we learn that Diane Lane has been cast as the other half of the parental dyad; she is officially on board the film as Martha "Ma" Kent. Read the full press release after the jump.
Lane is an actress of considerable talents. Most people probably remember her from her recent performance in Secretariat, but in 2008, she played Mary Rice in Doug Liman's Jumper, another role in which she was the mother to a child who had super powers. That role was woefully underwritten and Lane was completely squandered. Here's hoping that Snyder has something deeper in store for Ma Kent this time around.
Here's the full press release:
Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Oscar®-nominated actress Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, the only mother Clark Kent has ever known, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder. Snyder stated, "This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination." Lane will star with Henry Cavill, who was recently announced as the new Clark Kent/Superman.
Lane earned an Academy Award® nomination for her performance in the 2002 drama "Unfaithful." She most recently starred in the family hit "Secretariat." She next stars in the HBO feature "Cinema Verite," opposite Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini. Lane's long list of film credits also includes "Nights in Rodanthe," "Hollywoodland," "Must Love Dogs," "Under the Tuscan Sun," "Perfect Storm," "My Dog Skip," "Chaplin," "The Cotton Club" and "A Little Romance," to name only a portion.
Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers. Slated for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Judd Apatow Talks Pee-Wee Film And 'Knocked Up' Spin-off
Whether it be with ripping chest hair, unplanned pregnancy or dying comedians, Judd Apatow is always trying to get our attention. In recent months, two things that did just that were announcements that the writer/director/producer extraordinaire would be teaming up with Paul Reubens on a new Pee-Wee Herman movie and that, for his fourth directorial effort, he'd reprise two of the main characters from his film Knocked Up. Apatow has been doing the interview rounds lately and offered some updates on both projects. Read his quotes after the break.
Apatow spoke with Screen Junkies as he was given a humanitarian award by the Venice Family Clinic and here's what he had to say about these two high-profile projects, starting with Pee-Wee:
It's a little early in the process to know [what the film will be about]. He only made two movies so there's a lot of open ground for Pee-Wee. It is many years later so there are different stories to tell.
The film will, however, be strictly be about Pee-Wee, not Paul Reubens. Even so, they still aren't sure if it'll be in the same world as Big Adventure and Big Top:
We haven't talked about [the continuity]. It's more like The Simpsons where in every episode he grew up in a different decade.
Junkies then went on to inquire about Apatow's 2012 film, which will feature Pete and Debbie, played by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, the married couple in Knocked Up:
People were really taken by those characters. I think people really emotionally connected to the challenges of their marriage and I thought, you know, they were only a small portion of the movie. I'm a television writer so I always want another episode. I always want another 80 episodes. That's why after Forgetting Sarah Marshall, we said, 'What else can we do with this character Russell Brand has created here?' I felt that way about Pete and Debbie from Knocked Up.
And while initial reports weren't sure if other characters from Knocked Up would appear in this new film, Apatow has changed his tune on that:
I'm trying to figure out how [get other characters from Knocked Up]. A lot of it just depends on people's availabilities and the story I'm trying to tell, who fits into that story. There definitely will be other people from Knocked Up in the movie.
Apatow really didn't say more than that, just that the film is about "where Pete and Debbie are five years later." He also couldn't confirm if Katherine Heigl or Seth Rogen would be in the movie.
Though I didn't love Funny People, I loved Apatow's other films and have the utmost faith in him and his writing. He's a huge fan of Pee-Wee and would probably not make a movie before he made a bad one. Plus, he must really have something to say if he wants to go back to the well for his next film. What do you think?
