Leslie Nielsen Dead at 84
Manitoba radiostation CJOB 68 is reporting that comic actor Leslie Nielsen has passed away in hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida after complications from pneumonia. The website for the station has posted supposed audio of the news from Nielsen's nephew Doug Nielsen. I am unable to find a second confirmation of this report, but the news is being re-reported by big news publications.
Update: We now have an official confirmation, a statement from his agent:
We are sadden by the passing of beloved actor Leslie Nielsen, probably best remembered as Lt. Frank Drebin in THE NAKED GUN series of pictures, but who enjoyed a more than 60 year career in motion pictures and television.
Nielsen has appeared on the big and small screens for 55 years, appearing in a lot of popular spoof films like Airplane!, The Naked Gun Series, Spy Hard, the Scary Movie series, in the live-action adaptation of Mr. Magoo and most recently in Superhero Movie and Stan Helsing. I've included a couple compilations of Nielsen in action after the jump.

International Movie Trailer: Tom Tykwer's 'Drei'
After faltering with The International, acclaimed and very interesting filmmaker Tom Tykwer has made his first German film in several years. The movie is Drei (Three) and we've seen a couple of stills in the past months, but haven't had a lot of info. Turns out there's a German trailer for the film, and while half the clip will be inscrutable for those who don't speak German (like me) there's enough material here to give you some idea of what the film offers.
Thanks to Quiet Earth for pointing this one out; looks like it's a trailer that has been around for a bit. This is a strange trailer — the first part, with the narration over the camera pan across wires, was released as a teaser. But then there's a rocking middle section and a final chunk set to David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' which seems to present a lot more of the actual story setup. (Which is summarized below.) I can't tell at all what the overall tone of the film might be. But some of Mr. Tykwer's trademark visual and editing style is in evidence, and that's enough for me. Looking forward to a subtitled trailer, but for now this will do as a reminder that Drei exists.
THREE is about Hanna and Simon, a couple in their early forties who lives together in Berlin. Unknown to each other they both become acquainted with Adam, a younger man – and fall in love with him. When Hanna becomes pregnant, their whistle gets blown – and the question pops up: Who is the father? THREE is a tragicomical movie about love, morals and the sexes in a late-modernist German society at the mercy of its mixed feelings.
The cast includes German actors Sophie Rois, Devid Striesow and Sebastian Schipper.

'Zombieland 2â² Is Cameo Hunting; Plus Early Plot Hints
[Editor's note: The following article debatably contains a spoiler for the original Zombieland.]
It's not crazy to surmise that Zombieland went from good to great when Bill 'Ghostbustin" Murray hit the screen. His cameo in the Ruben Fleischer directed, Rhett Reese/Paul Wernick horror comedy took an entertaining film to a whole new level because it was so totally unexpected and funny. Well, as is the case with any sequel, the surprises are going to be tougher to come by this time around. Reports are coming in that the new script for Zombieland 2 features another "superstar cameo." And while Reese and Wernick currently have their hands full with various projects and Fleischer himself has one film coming out with another in development, there's no word on when that role will be filled. Hit the jump for a few names on the wish list in addition to some other early hints of what to expect from Zombieland 2.
The report in question comes from Bloody Disgusting and they're reporting that names like Harrison Ford and Anthony Hopkins are being thrown around for the cameo. Ford would obviously be on the top of anyone's wish list and with his recent resurgence, maybe it's even doable. And one would imagine if Hopkins took the part, he's probably assume his most famous role as Dr. Hannibal Lecter. That character as a zombie would be perfect.
The Bloody Disgusting report also states that the film calls for "a lead villain with comedic roots" and that Woody Harrelson's character Tallahassee will "find himself going head-to-head with a 'hunky rival.'" Finally, they report that only Jesse Eisenberg has officially re-signed for the film, so until they can get rising stars like Emma Stone back in the mix, Zombieland 2 is still a way's away.
It's no surprise that Sony would want to duplicate the winning formula from the first Zombieland and that cameos would be a part of that. But wasn't the fun of the Murray cameo that we knew nothing about it? Will you search out the "superstar cameo" this time around or hope to be surprised when the lights go down?

THR's 2010 Awards Watch Animators Roundtable
It's award season, and The Hollywood Reporter has begun posting their series of roundtable discussions with the contenders. Earlier this month they posted an one-hour discussion between screenwriters Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network), Simon Beaufoy (127 Hours), Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3), John Wells (The Company Men), Todd Phillips (Due Date) and David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole).
Today we get to watch/listen to the Animators roundtable, which includes Bonnie Arnold (producer, How to Train Your Dragon), Roy Conli (producer, Tangled), Bob Last (producer, The Illusionist), Tom McGrath (director, Megamind), Chris Meledandri (producer, Despicable Me) and Lee Unkrich (director, Toy Story 3).
Unfortunately, unlike the screenwriters roundtable, THR has decided not to put the entire video online. Instead they have given us three clips and have a full transcript of the roundtable online only for subscribers. You can still watch over ten minutes of the roundtable in selected clips embedded after the jump.

Michael Hoffman Will Direct 'Gambit,' Written by Joel and Ethan Coen
Let's get this out of the way first: Joel and Ethan Coen have not written a film based on the Marvel Comics character Gambit. They have, however, scripted a remake of a 1966 romantic heist movie that originally starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine.
News that the script was still kicking around in development came out back in January of this year, and in April it was a possible project on the docket for director Doug Liman. But he passed (he'll make All You Need Is Kill instead) and now the directorial duties fall to Michael Hoffman, who last made The Last Station.
Deadline says the picture is set to shoot in London in May, but the film isn't yet cast. The original had a thief attempting to rob a millionaire with the assistance of a waitress who looks just like the target's late wife.
There are very few Coen-scripted projects that aren't also directed by the brothers. The most (in)famous is Crimewave, which their university classmate and friend Sam Raimi directed. (He also co-wrote and directed second unit work on the Coens' The Hudsucker Proxy, remember.) The Coens also make a rare cameo appearance in that movie, which has been mostly out of print for many years. And then there's The Naked Man, directed by frequent Coen storyboard artist J. Todd Anderson, and co-written by him and Ethan Coen.
So Gambit is something of an occasion. What will Mr. Hoffman do with it? I can't wait to find out. He's not my ideal directorial choice, as much of his work tends to be adult-oriented prestige drama or comedy that doesn't quite manage to prize liveliness over other qualities. (Thinking here of films like Restoration and A Midsummer Night's Dream.) Though sometimes, as with The Last Station, he elicits (or allows) performances that really stand out. Hoping for that with Gambit; we'll keep an eye on casting breaks.
Here's the full recap of the original version of Gambit:
Ideal and reality clash in this humorous tale of the heist that could have been. As scheming career cat burglar Harry Dean (Michael Cane) prepares to steal a priceless statue from the world's richest man, he seeks out the assistance of Eurasian showgirl Suzy Chang (Shirley MacLaine). Though the likable rogue's plan seems foolproof as he conveys the details to his partner Ram (Robert C. Carmel), the execution proves a detailed study in Murphy's Law. Constantly reinventing the plan as his originally ideal spirals ever more out of control, it seems as if Harry's heist is destined to fail.
