George Clooney's 'Farragut North' Gets Funding and a New Title: 'The Ides of March'
There's a whole bunch of news for George Clooney's fourth film as director. The Ides of March is a much more imposing title for the film formerly called Farragut North, which is based on a play with the same title. Along with the title change is news of new funding for the movie, as well as a confirmation of one actor's appearance and word that George Clooney will be in the film as well.
A press release from Exclusive Media Group and Cross Creek announces a deal for the companies to jointly fund the picture. The film will shoot in February 2011 in Michigan and Ohio, and there is also some cast confirmation.
When last we heard about the film, George Clooney reportedly wanted Ryan Gosling to play one of the primary roles. Shockingly, the actor agreed, and is now on board.
So here's the rundown: The Ides of March is based on Beau Williamson's play of the same name, which was born out of the playwright's experience on Howard Dean's 2004 campaign.
George Clooney, who adapted the play withe Grant Heslov, will play Governor Morris, who is running for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Ryan Gosling will be Stephen Meyers, his young campaign mastermind. Paul Giamatti a rival candidate's campaign leader. Marisa Tomei plays a New York Times reporter and Evan Rachel Wood an intern with whom Ryan Gosling's character has a liason. Philip Seymour Hoffman was previously said to be the campaign boss for Governor Morris, but he's not confirmed, and may not end up in the picture.
Here's some of the press release to get you amped up in the weeks before the film shoots. Expect to hear some more cast announcements soon. The film also does not have a distributor, and with this cast you'd expect someone to buy in well before the film gets to the festival circuit. Expect to see footage of this one late next summer, and it is virtually a lock for either Venice or Toronto 2011.
With sharp, quick-witted dialogue and set against the spectacle of modern world power and politics, The Ides of March is a intense tale of sex, ambition, loyalty, betrayal and revenge. The film follows a young press spokesman who falls prey to backroom politics, the treacherous manipulations of veteran operatives and the seduction of a young intern.

Miley Cyrus' Parents, Billy and Tish, File for Divorce
Billy Ray Cyrus filed for divorce from Leticia 'Tish' Cyrus in Tennessee on October 26, citing 'irreconcilable differences' and seeking for shared custody of their three minor kids.
Casting Notes: Eugene Levy in 'Goon'; Angela Lansbury in 'Mr. Popper's Penuins'; Marianne Jean-Baptise in 'Violet & Daisy'
In the race to make a hockey comedy the clear winner will be Goon, which stars Jay Baruchel and Seann William Scott. (Runner-up might be Kevin Smith's Hit Somebody.) Goon is based on a script by Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg, which in turn was inspired by the book Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey Into Minor League Hockey. Now Eugene Levy is joining the cast as the film shoots in Winnipeg. We don't know his role, but prepare to see a character that looks quite a lot like many other Eugene Levy characters. He's good, but not a guy you hire when you're trying to work out of the box.
The film is about " a slacker and born brawler who's invited to join a minor league hockey team. Persuaded by his best friend to accept the offer, he becomes the hero of the team — until the league's reigning goon decides to take him down." Liev Schreiber also stars. [Variety]
After the break, new talent for Mr. Popper's Penguins and Violet & Daisy.
Another film shooting now is Mr. Popper's Penguins, which adapts and slightly changes the classic kids' book about a man who inherits a handful of penguins, and the chaos that comes to pass in his life afterward. Jim Carrey is playing the title role (Mr. Popper, not the penguins) and the cast also features Carla Gugino, Ophelia Lovibond and Philip Baker Hall under the direction of Mark Waters.
Now Angela Lansbury has signed on as Mrs. Van Gundy, "the owner of a local tavern that Mr. Popper, played by Carrey, is trying to buy." The aging actress isn't seen all that often (she's 85) but it's always good to see a genuine screen legend still grabbing a bit of work. Makes me want to rewatch The Manchurian Candidate. [Variety]
Finally, Violet & Daisy, the teen-girl-assassin picture that marks the directorial debut of Precious screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher, just got a great new addition: Marianne Jean-Baptiste. She plays Number 1, "a worldly shapte-shifting assassin." While the film seems a little suspect — there's already another teen assassin film, Hanna, that will beat it to theaters — that idea is pretty cool, and makes this one sound like it's got a little Seijun Suzuki edge.
Saoirse Ronan and Alexis Bledel play teen killers taking what is meant to be an easy job, but their mark is a more complicated man than they expect. James Gandolfini and Danny Trejo also appear. The film is shooting now. [BVonMovies]

Zach Galifianakis Joins The New Muppets Movie
The Muppets have taken Manhattan, followed that bird, been to Treasure Island, space and more. Now it seems their Christmas 2011 film might end up Between Two Ferns. A very famous source confirmed that Zach Galifianakis will be "doing a couple days" in the currently Untitled Muppets Movie co-written and staring Muppet super fan Jason Segel. Amy Adams, Rashida Jones and Chris Cooper are all also in the James Bobin (Flight of the Conchords) directed film which will be about Segel's character, and a brand new Muppet, trying to save the Muppet Studios. The source for the Galifianakis news? None other than Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr. Check out the video and more after the jump.
During an interview with E! Online promoting Due Date, Robert Downey Jr. haphazardly let the news slip that The Hangover 2 comedian will be appearing in the film.
"So you're doing a couple days on the Muppets movie?" Downey asks. Galifianakis' face then drops as if to say, "You are no longer a member of my wolfpack!" But he says nothing. Downey continues by saying, "You are. You heard it here first" to the delight of Ben Lyons of E! Check out the clip below.
Entertainment Weekly called Galifianakis' people to confirm but they would only say he's "talking about it." But if he's "talking about it" to Robert Downey Jr. to a point where Downey is confident enough to blurt out the news, I'd count that as a much more credible source than anyone's management.
Galifianakis has previous worked with The Muppets in the below video created by the band OK Go!
As seen there, the Muppets are simultaneously family friendly and subversively sly so Galifanakis, whose humor is similarly dichotomous, seems like a perfect addition to the film. However, don't get the Untitled Muppet Movie mixed up with Happytime Murders, which Lionsgate recently purchased. That's the noir Muppet movie which is still in script form. The Untitled Muppet Movie stars filming soon.
As news continues to leak about next year's Muppet movie, do your expectations continue to grow?

Mark Wahlberg to Star in Seth MacFarlane's R-Rated Teddy Bear Comedy 'Ted'
Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is making his directorial feature debut with Ted (also referred to before by the title Teddy Bear), a hard-R, $65 million(!) comedy from Universal Pictures about a man whose teddy bear comes to life and turns out to be a partying, womanizing, video game-playing pot smoker. A couple of weeks back, we mentioned a rumor that Mark Wahlberg had been eyeing the lead role for the film, and now the casting process has taken a step forward.
Deadline says Wahlberg will indeed star in the film, though let's state for the record that they're still in negotiations; nothing has been signed just yet.
Wahlberg will play "an average Boston guy, normal except for the childhood wish he made that his teddy bear could come to life — and it did. Years later, the boy is an adult, and the bear is still his best friend. But the bear, a carousing, irresponsible slacker, is getting in the way of his buddy committing to adulthood and the girl he loves."
The film will be entirely live-action with the exception of the bear, which will be created with CG, and voiced (not surprisingly) by MacFarlane himself. MacFarlane co-wrote the script with Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild, two of the Family Guy writing staff. We've already learned about some of the other roles that the film will feature, such as "a racist homosexual, a woman obsessed with talking about men shaving their assholes, and a 'Jewish-looking' person who makes anti-Semitic remarks".
I think the premise has a lot of potential, but then I read things like that and am instantly reminded that this is a Seth MacFarlane film. Still, watching Mark Wahlberg act opposite a cartoon teddy bear? Could be fun.
