Adam's Review: The Social Network - The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth

socialnetwork

Spoiler Warning: The Social Network is not a movie that can be spoiled by mere plot details, as most of those plot details are revealed within the first 20 minutes. Regardless, if you're hoping to go into the film fresh, you should obviously avoid this review.

There's a hopeful, almost celebratory moment in The Social Network when Napster-creator Sean Parker declares to Facebook-creator Mark Zuckerberg, "This is our time!" And that, at its core, is what the film is about: the era of the geek; the triumph of the reject; the rebellion of the social outcast. Where once business relied heavily on having a wealthy, privileged, image-centric mediator to buy and sell smarter people's work, the Internet has made way for a generation of 20-somethings that no longer need to rely on the societal rules of generations past to secure a billion dollar enterprise. In this digital age, geeks have a platform filled with possibilities, and as the president of Harvard so succinctly puts it, "Inventing a job is better than getting one." In this digital age, the geeks rule. And with their newfound power, they say "Fuck you" to those unwilling to accept that they are no longer in control.

Tragically, for many of the well-meaning characters in The Social Network, they are on the receiving end of that "Fuck you".

The Social Network is not a coming-of-age story. It isn't a journey of self-discovery and growth. It's a coming-of-success story, about a kid who learns almost nothing, doesn't change and ultimately doesn't need to, thanks entirely to the luxuries that the Internet provides. His only life lesson (hence the "almost") comes as a result of betraying his best friend, a decision which costs him the only real relationship in his life.

That aforementioned moment of triumph? It's deserving of neither hope nor celebration. Were it just the landscape of business that was evolving, it might've been, but this isn't Revenge of the Nerds, and Mark Zuckerberg isn't an underdog who deserves rooting for. No, Mark Zuckerberg is a product of his time—a seemingly hollow vessel of a person that's self-important and coldly calculating, constantly shifting emotions just below the surface. He's oscillates between being petty, insecure, vindictive, apathetic, conniving, and just about every other trait that results when youth, intelligence, and an increased disconnect from genuine human interaction collide.

Mark Zuckberg is an unlikable character, no doubt, but he's also a tragic one. In an earlier decade, somebody like Zuckerberg probably would've been taken advantage of, his intellect helping catapult the success of a lesser mind with a fuller bank account. Maybe that's an experience from which Zuckerberg would've benefited. The illusion of his invincibility would've been broken, allowing him to grow up and mature and better himself. With the Internet though, all you need to achieve success is a good idea, the know-how to implement it, and enough money to keep a website running. At age 20, Zuckerberg already has those things, so all that's lacking in his life—humility, respect, basic human decency—he has no reason to learn.

The Social Network is scary, in many ways. It taps into a very real change in our society, highlighting how adolescents motivated by petty rivalries and trifling girl squabbles can very easily come to define the modern business world–and, in turn, our lives. As Zuckerberg rushes to his first billion dollars, he has no remorse for the toll his actions are taking on others, and no sense of the toll those actions will inevitably take on himself. He gains power and wealth, but in doing so only further alienates himself from the rest of the world. There's a poetry to that; the man responsible for reinventing how people connect to one another is himself completely disconnected from everyone.

The brilliance of The Social Network is that there's never a moment where screenwriter Aaron Sorkin feels the need to spell out what the film's themes and ideas are, or tell you how to feel about them. He saw how these people could serve the purpose required of them by providing them with personalities and motivations that would best personify the changing times, and allows their naturally resulting actions and dialogue—commonly occurring through propulsive streams of genuinely funny and whip-smart verbal sparring—to communicate the rest.

If the veracity of the picture is in question, it shouldn't be. Like any other story that's been inspired by true events, The Social Network is a work of fiction, plain and simple. Though the character

Universal Buys 'Snow White and the Huntsman' Spec Script

snow-white-huntsman

Last time we heard about Snow White it was because Natalie Portman was rumored for the starring role in Brothers Grimm: Snow White, a re-telling of the tale to be produced by Brett Ratner. In true Hollywood form, however, there is more than one Snow White re-do being shopped around town. There are three, in fact. One is the one I just mentioned, backed by Ratner and Relativity. The second is housed at Disney, and is called Snow and the Seven. (The, er, Twitter-friendly title.)

The third is this project for which Universal has just ponied up a rather large amount of cash: Snow White and the Huntsman.

THR
says that the spec script, by Greyskull writer Evan Daughterty and with director Rupert Sanders attached, was picked up by Universal. Deadline says the deal was huge: $1.5m against $3m if/when the film is produced. That's a lot of cash for a script that has two direct competitors at other studios. It's a staggering amount of cash from a studio that has suffered a few big flops in the past year. First thought: the guys who nailed this sale shut are throwing around awesome cocaine. Could the script possibly be that good?

Well, let's see. This one reportedly reworks the classic fairy tale by having the Huntsman go against orders and refuse to kill Snow White, instead tagging along with her as mentor as she's "trained to fight and survive." Snow White plus Prince of Persia, in other words. Or by way of Tangled, take your pick. There is reportedly still a love story aspect, as the Huntsman doesn't replace the Prince. (Got the script? Someone has to, after it has been paraded around town like this. Let us take a gander, please. So curious!)

Could Sanders also be a part of the huge cash transfer? He's been a possible hire for several big projects after making a series of award-winning commercials, snagging Cannes accolades and crafting a live-action commmercial for Halo: ODST. Yeah, he probably is. Still: with two competing projects going, one from Disney, this seems like a big gamble for Universal.

Clint Eastwood Looking to Joaquin Phoenix to Play Key Role in 'Hoover'?

jpoaquin-phoenix-2a

Clint Eastwood still hasn't got a final signed deal that will have Leonardo DiCaprio playing legendary FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, but the film Hoover is still moving forward. There's a report now saying that Joaquin Phoenix is Eastwood's top choice for another role in the film: associate FBI director and reported Hoover paramour Clyde Tolson.

Vulture has unnamed sources saying that an offer will go out to Phoenix as soon as DiCaprio's deal is signed.

I'm perhaps more curious than ever to learn about the Hoover script, by Dustin Lance Black. This is in the wake of the Toronto Film Festival, where Black's directorial debut What's Wrong With Virginia? was met with scathing reviews. That film has nothing to do with Hoover, obviously, but it's an interesting position for a new filmmaker to be in: an Oscar in hand, a deal writing a major film like Hoover, and then a reported disaster at TIFF. Rough business, Hollywood.

Vulture's info is that the Hoover script "explores the two men's complicated relationship; neither man ever admitted to being gay, and Hoover was known for hunting down and intimidating those who dared questioned his sexual preference while he was alive."

There's no question about the veracity of Hoover's persecution of homosexuals, but questions about the man's own sexuality have lingered for years, with rumors of cross-dressing and other proclivities coming into play.

But, as Vulture notes, Tolson did inherit Hoover's estate and received benefits from his life insurance policy. But perhaps Hoover simply didn't have any other trusted friends? He wasn't the most popular guy, especially late in life.

Going beyond the suppositions about the script and Hoover's own history, I'd be excited to see Phoenix working opposite DiCaprio, and I'm still intrigued by the idea of Black writing the film. Hoover could be quite a project.

Sounds like a fun publicity stunt which perfectly ties in with the books and the film. Read the full press release after the jump.

Pay What You Want for a Sneak Preview of Freakonomics: The Movie

Screenings in ten cities offer fans an opportunity to see the upcoming film based on the internationally bestselling book for a price that they choose.

New York, NY (September 15, 2010) Magnolia Pictures and the Green Film Company announced today a unique screening program in ten cities across the country that will allow filmgoers to choose how much they want to pay for an advance look at Freakonomics: The Movie. The highly anticipated film version of the internationally bestselling book by Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt hits theaters nationwide on October 1st. These pay-what-you-want screenings offer fans a chance to see the film on Wednesday, September 22nd, over a week before its official opening, at Landmark Theatres in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Philadelphia, Denver and Seattle.

Tickets for the screenings are now available, and are being exclusively sold online through MovieTickets.com. Filmgoers can choose how much they wish to pay-anywhere in the range of $.01 to $100, with the completion of a short questionnaire. The survey, which after completion gives access to the ticket buying page on MovieTickets.com is accessible here:

http://www.magpictures.com/freakonomics/freaksurvey.html

The data collected anonymously at the time of purchase will be analyzed by authors Dubner and Levitt to identify what factors and circumstances prompt movie-goers to pay more or less for their screening tickets.

In the spirit of the creative, incentives-based thinking behind Freakonomics, the pay-what-you-want screenings reference a popular experiment from the original book, in which authors Levitt and Dubner analyze how people interact with a weekly, pay-what-you-want bagel delivery service.

"The pay-what-you-want screening represents a fun and engaging way to illustrate the underlying premise of Freakonomics-the application of economics and incentives-based thinking to everyday situations to uncover surprising and sometimes controversial conclusions," muses producer Chad Troutwine. "It seems only fitting, then, to engage Freakonomics audiences in their own local economic experiment, offering a chance to see the film in advance of its theatrical release while simultaneously bringing the concept of incentives thinking to life."

Produced by Green Film Company and distributed by Magnolia Pictures, Freakonomics examines human behavior with provocative and often hilarious case studies brought to life by a dream team of Academy Award® and Sundance Film Festival winning directors. Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing (Jesus Camp) balance levity and candor with their eye-opening profile of underachieving kids incentivized to learn with cold hard cash. Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room) delivers a visually arresting look at the crumbling facade of Sumo wrestling. Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) offers up a buoyant and revealing angle on the repercussions of baby names. Finally, Eugene Jarecki (Why We Fight) investigates an unsettling theory to explain why crime rates dramatically dropped in the early 1990s. Seth Gordon (The King of Kong) weaves the segments together with brisk interludes, providing context and commentary from authors Dubner and Levitt.

Space at the pay-what-you-want screenings are limited, and tickets available on a first come, first served basis. In addition to opening theatrically nationwide on October 1st, Freakonomics is also available for rent at a premium advance price on iTunes (www.iTunes.com/freakonomics), Amazon, and On Demand through major cable providers everywhere.

Sony Developing a Mixed-Martial Arts Movie Starring...Kevin James?

kevin-james-1a

That loud 'thwack!' you just heard was the sound of thousands of fight enthusiasts face-palming in unison. As part of Sony's continuing program to make money off the same audience that turned Paul Blart: Mall Cop into a big hit, the studio is developing a new, as yet untitled comedy that will see Kevin James winning fights in the Octagon.

To be scripted by Allan Loeb, the story will have James as "a physics teacher whose school faces drastic cutbacks. In an attempt to save his best friend's job and the music program his students love, he moonlights in the octagon as a mixed martial arts fighter, ultimately leading to brawling in the UFC."

Is this Beverly Hills Ninja or more like Chubby Rocky? I can't really tell from that synopsis, though knowing James' onscreen persona I'm guessing more the former. I'd prefer the latter, but don't really expect that's what we'll get. (In this case, I'll take an inspirational if wildly unlikely comedy over the broad, slapstick-y, wildly unlikely comedy.)

More on this one as it comes in, so you can at least enjoy the hilarity from the sidelines. [Deadline]
