While most of my memories leading up to Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace were positive, the best one I have as a direct result of the movie was falling off a chair from laughing so hard at the video review by Red Letter Media. The 70-minute evisceration of the film is a work of unparalleled genius and turned the review persona of Mr. Plinkett into an internet legend.

With the film being released in theaters this weekend, Red Letter Media couldn't pass up the chance to get a few more views by following George Lucas' lead and converting the review to 3D. Check it out.

Here are both parts of the review from Red Letter Media's site. Of course, you'll need the old school red and blue 3D glasses for the experience to work. The Real-D ones you left in your pocket after Tintin will not do the trick.

Gary Oldman was at a Q&A (via Collider) and hinted at a very emotional Alfred scene in The Dark Knight Rises:

Watching Michael Caine work, as Alfred, was a great lesson for me. Just focus, concentration. He has this emotional scene. I'm kidding you not. It was tears and the whole thing. And it's 'Take 1.' (Oldman snaps his fingers) He got it. 'Take 2? (snaps his fingers again), Got it. Take 3 (snaps his fingers) Got it. He's just on the money. Every single time. Our apologies. Even if you live in Los Angeles, posting about Jason Reitman's awesome live readings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is torture. The casts are so fantastic, the projects so good and yet it's virtually impossible to go because they sell out so quickly. In fact, they sell-out weeks before the script or cast is even announced.

I was lucky enough to see The Princess Bride a few months back with Paul Rudd, Mindy Kaling, Patton Oswalt and returning cast members Cary Elwes and Fred Savage. Reitman has also done The Apartment with Natalie Portman and Steve Carell, The Breakfast Club with Aaron Paul and Jennifer Garner and more. It's super-impressive.

The penultimate reading, long sold out, happens February 16 and it's Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. That by itself is insane. But instead of simply casting alternative famous people to play roles actors like Harvey Keitel, Steve Buscemi and Tim Roth made famous, Reitman and co-curator Elvis Mitchell decided to change the entire race of the project. They've selected an all-black cast. Read the list after the jump.

For Mr. Blonde, originally played by Michael Madsen, Reitman has cast Terrence Howard.
For Mr. Pink, originally played by Steve Buscemi, he's cast Anthony Mackie.
For Mr. Orange, originally played by Tim Roth, he's cast Cuba Gooding Jr.
For Nice Guy Eddie, originally played by Chris Penn, he's cast Anthony Anderson.

And for Mr. White, originally played by Harvey Keitel, he's cast…we don't know yet. The Entertainment Weekly article leaves that role open for debate at this point, along with others like Mr. Brown (originally played by Tarantino), Joe, the cop Marvin Nash and the radio DJ originally voiced by Steven Wright. Odds are, Mr. White will be the biggest name of the bunch as Reitman likes to save one big name for last. My guess? Morgan Freeman.

One of the films announced today as part of the SXSW 2012 Midnight lineup is The Aggression Scale, from director/editor Steven C. Miller (Automaton Transfusion) and writer Ben Powell. The film is called "an 80′s influenced thriller with teenagers as the heroes," and comes from Snowfort Pictures and producer Travis Stevens, who is behind A Horrible Way to Die and Jodorowsky's Dune.

The film stars a great lineup of new and veteran genre and not-quite-mainstream actors: Fabianne Therese (John Dies at the End), Ryan Hartwig (The Thompsons), Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peaks), Derek Mears (Friday the 13th), Jacob Reynolds (Gummo), Joseph McKelheer (The Hamiltons) and Ray Wise (Twin Peaks).

We've got the exclusive poster premiere below, as well as some stills and the first trailer, all of which were released today.

The poster bears an obvious influence from A History of Violence — something that was very intentional — and that influence could extend to the film as well. The synopsis is pretty simple:

4 hitmen + $500,000 of stolen cash + 1 family = WAR

The trailer comes from THR, and the gallery of pics below it was sourced from Arrow in the Head, STYD and Twitch.

'Harry Potter' Director David Yates to Work With Emma Watson in 'Your Voice in My Head'

David Yates, the man who directed the last four Harry Potter movies, has been courted to make some big movies for Warner Bros in the wake of Potter's finale, most notably the adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand, and also the Alan Turing biopic Imitation Game.

While Yates was briefly attached to make The Stand, he pulled away from that film and instead has settled on something smaller: an adaptation of Emma Forrest's memoir Your Voice in My Head. And now it looks like Yates will have Harry Potter's Emma Watson along for the ride in the lead role.

Deadline says that Yates is in talks with Watson to play the lead role, a young journalist who tries to kill herself but finds a sort of salvation though the influence of an older psychiatrist. For the role of the psychiatrist, Yates and Warner Bros. are reportedly looking at actors like Tom Hanks and George Clooney, but nothing is set yet on that front.

When the project was first announced, Yates said,

It's a small film, hard hitting and with elements of magic realism. Compared to 'Potter' it would cost tuppency ha'penny, and for that reason it would be incredibly liberating to make.

And here's the synopsis of the book. Bit spoilerish, perhaps, for those who don't want to know anything about a film that a trailer wouldn't show.

Emma Forrest, a British journalist, was just twenty-two and living the fast life in New York City when she realized that her quirks had gone beyond eccentricity. In a cycle of loneliness, damaging relationships, and destructive behavior, she found herself in the chair of a slim, balding, and effortlessly optimistic psychiatrist—a man whose wisdom and humanity would wrench her from the dangerous tide after she tried to end her life. She was on the brink of drowning, but she was still working, still exploring, still writing, and she had also fallen deeply in love. One day, when Emma called to make an appointment with her psychiatrist, she found no one there. He had died, shockingly, at the age of fifty-three, leaving behind a young family. Reeling from the premature death of a man who had become her anchor after she turned up on his doorstep, she was adrift. And when her all-consuming romantic relationship also fell apart, Emma was forced to cling to the page for survival and regain her footing on her own terms. A modern-day fairy tale, Your Voice in My Head is a stunning memoir, clear-eyed and shot through with wit. When people think of 1999 movies, titles like Fight Club, The Matrix and Being John Malkovich are just a few of the influential titles mentioned. One that regularly gets overlooked is American Pie, which not only was a massive hit, it launched a franchise, multiple catchphrases and the careers of several actors. It's now 13 years later and 2012, once again, has a very impressive set of films coming out and, once again, American Reunion is getting overlooked. The fourth theatrical Pie film returns the entire cast for their 10 year high school reunion and will be released on April 6.

The dates for DCA's grand re-opening event have finally been chosen. June 14th will be the media day and private celebrity party, and June 15th will be the official first day of operation for customers. There will only be a handful of days for AP Previews and soft openings for Cars Land in early June, and those dates aren't confirmed yet. June 15th will also kick off DCA's new operating schedule of daily 8AM to 11PM hours through the summer.

Beware the Final 'Chronicle' Teaser Trailer

The low-budget 'teens with powers' movie Chronicle opens this week, I'm finding that a lot of people still don't know too much about it. That's too bad, because Chronicle is a lot of fun. It is a film that explores its premise well, while also proving that it doesn't take $150m to make a successful movie along these lines.

In short, I hope people see the picture. Chronicle deserves an audience.

Here is one last teaser for the movie, but I have to say that it might not be the best one to watch. Just by the nature of having to advertise the film, some of Chronicle's secrets and better scenes have been glimpsed in the full trailer and other teasers that follow. But this one, to me, seems to give up just a bit more of the last act than I'd like.

I'm not going to say "don't watch this one," but if you don't know anything about Chronicle at all, I'd just check out the full trailer, which is embedded first:

You'll notice in the trailer that there isn't much music, and that is because Chronicle uses a sort of 'found footage' conceit. It sticks to the idea well, with all the footage in the film supposedly shot by the characters. Director Josh Trank followed that idea to a logical conclusion, which is that any music heard in the film is diegetic — it is played or heard by the characters. So there is no score. That's a ballsy move, but it works well for the film.

The sale of physical movies is way down, as a result: some of the movie studios have been acting irrationally — forcing delays on physical rental services like Netflix, Blockbuster and Red Box. Because if customers aren't buying your movies anymore, they must be punished.

Earlier this month it was announced that Warner Bros would no longer sell their DVDs and Blu-rays to rental services unless they adhere to a 56-day delay. This move forces film fans to pay full retail to see a new DVD/Blu-ray release, or wait until two months later to rent the film. Engadget reported that it was heavily implied "that the studio was threatening to withdraw access to its library unless the rental service complied." Well it looks like Red Box won't be having any part of this.

Variety reposts that "after lengthy talks between WB and Redbox this month, the companies couldn't come to an agreement over the new demands from the studio." Red Box will instead purchase the movies on DVD and Blu-ray through "alternate means" (aka retail) and offer the movies for rental the same day as they are released in stores for purchase. Even though I don't use the Red Box kiosks, I admire Red Box for sticking up to the studio in the face of these unreasonable operating requests. It's sad how little Hollywood has learned from the music industry over the last decade. It should be noted that some other studios (like Paramount) have thought this out and come to the conclusion that offering same-day rental doesn't affect disc sales. I hope that Red Box decides not to renew its 28-day rental delay deal with Universal which comes up in April.

'Sleepwalk With Me' - Comedian Mike Birbiglia's Hilarious, Heartfelt Feature Debut [Sundance 2012 Video Blog]

There's a running joke amongst comedians that people get into stand-up just so they can be TV stars. It works for some but for others, it seems like stand-up might be a better route to get into film directing. It worked for Woody Allen, Louis CK and now it's worked for Mike Birbiglia, a successful touring comedian who turned his one man autobiographical off-Broadway show Sleepwalk With Me into a feature film. The movie just had its world premiere at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

Birbiglia stars as Matt, a struggling stand-up comedian who has been with his girlfriend Abby (Lauren Ambrose) for eight years. When the couple begins to have problems, Matt uses that to finally find his voice, which in turn makes the relationship even more difficult. Then there's the tiny matter of Matt dangerously sleepwalking every night, all of which actually happened in Birbiglia's life.

Co-starring James Rebhorn, Carol Kane, Marc Maron and produced by Ira Glass (This American Life), Sleepwalk With Me is incredibly clever, well-directed and laugh out loud hilarious. The message isn't all that new, but the journey there definitely is.

I hope Sleepwalk With Me gets picked up as soon as possible because I'd love to turn people on to this well-made, funny smart film. It's a real crowd-pleasing delight.

'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' Behind the Scenes Reel Highlights Adventurous Directors

It's been a bumpy ride for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. The film is a sequel to a movie very few people liked; when first announced there wasn't a lot of enthusiasm for the project. Then Crank and Gamer directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor came on board. Their hyper-kinetic, seat of the pants directorial style seemed so perfect for Ghost Rider that expectations elevated a bit. A Comic Con appearance featuring a lot of wild clips from the movie along with some great behind the scenes footage generated a legitimate sense of enthusiasm for the movie.

Then Spirit of Vengeance premiered at Harry Knowles' 24-hour film marathon / birthday party this year, and things deflated really fast.

Just for the sake of fun, let's turn back to the days of all that Comic Con excitement. If you weren't in Hall H when Sony showed off the behind the scenes footage from Spirit of Vengeance, you can now check it out below. No matter how the final film actually plays, this is a great making-of clip. It might be a lot more fun to watch than the film.

I like seeing Brian Taylor rocking his Comic Con-made Sex Bob-Omb shirt, but I really love watching some of the absurd stuff the two guys to to get a shot. I could almost see a feature-length making-of being something worth watching.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance also stars Ciaran Hinds, Violante Placido, and Johnny Whitworth. It hits theaters on February 17, 2012.

Let's take a break from the flood of Sundance news and all the Oscar talk to look at one of the weirder indie projects out there: the crowd-assembled Star Wars remake. Star Wars Uncut is a project that started over two years ago when Casey Pugh invited Star Wars fans to do their own recreations of specific scenes from the 1977 film Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Fifteen seconds at a time, fans made their own version of the '77 film, the most special of all editions.

You might have seen the first assembled release of Star Wars Uncut, but the entirety of the film has been re-edited into a more seamless whole, and it is the sort of weird, unpredictable ride that only the internet can provide. This movie is the internet, really, or at many of the internet's most common obsessions, all filtered through Star Wars. (Itself an internet obsession, of course.)

Despite the fact that fragments of scenes were created one bit at a time, in a wide variety of styles and with technique that ranges from 'inspired' (Darth Vader's breathing represented by a bottle of Johnny Walker Black that fills and drains) to the 'cute but clueless,' (quite a lot of it) there is a surprising uniformity here, and the assembled whole is more watchable than you'd expect. this one is a slightly more artfully assembled version that flows much better. Check it out below.

In 2009, Casey Pugh asked thousands of Internet users to remake "Star Wars: A New Hope" into a fan film, 15 seconds at a time. Contributors were allowed to recreate scenes from Star Wars however they wanted. Within just a few months SWU grew into a wild success. The creativity that poured into the project was unimaginable.

SWU has been featured in documentaries, news features and conferences around the world for its unique appeal. In 2010 we won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Creative Achievement In Interactive Media.

Finally, the crowd-sourced project has been stitched together and put online for your streaming pleasure. The "Director's Cut" is a feature-length film that contains hand-picked scenes from the entire StarWarsUncut.com collection.

'The Grey' Red-Band Trailer

Joe Carnahan's adventure/survival film The Grey opens this week, and a new red-band trailer has shown up to promote the movie in the final days before the movie hits. You probably know most of the basic info about the movie: Liam Neeson plays one of a group of roughnecks heading back to civilization from a remote Alaskan job who has to confront a hungry and vicious pack of wolves when a plane crash strands the men in the middle of nowhere.

The film became internet-famous for the teaser trailer's shot of Liam Neeson taping broken bottles to his knuckles in preparation for a battle with one of the wolves, but there's more to the movie than that. I liked The Grey quite a lot — it is a solid, satisfying B-movie that has just enough subtext to overcome the fact that the attacking wolves are, well, a little dodgy.

This red-band trailer will give you a taste of the film's full spectrum of intensity and violence. Check it out below.

'The Amazing Spider-Man' Press Conference Announces June 30 Japanese Premiere and Some Plot Details

Got an hour to kill today? Check out the Japanese press conference for Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man, at which producers Avi Arad and Matthew Tolmach, and stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone took the stage after a screening of seven minutes of footage. We can't show you the footage, but a video of the full press conference is online, and it gives up a few new tidbits of info about the film's plot.

During the press conference, Avi Arad explained part of what sets this film apart from Sam Raimi's trilogy, beyond the obvious differences,

In our movie, [Peter] finds his true love. Gwen Stacy was always the true love of Peter Parker… We found a very, very good story about what makes a human being. About what sets their destiny.

And Andrew Garfield spoke about the action in the film, reinforcing what we've seen as the film was in production, as far as the use of practical stunts and effects.

As you can see, a lot of the stunts are practical and grounded in reality. That was something that Marc, the director, really wanted to make sure happened in this movie to set it apart from previous ones… I would exhaust myself every day and get into near-death experiences every hour on the hour… I collaborated with [the stunt team] not only on the big stunt set-pieces but also on what happens to Peter's body when he gets bitten. What happens to his DNA and how that effects the way he moves and the way he interacts with objects. The idea that he has spider DNA running in his system. What that will do to his sense of space. What that will do to the sensitivity of his skin. To have an opportunity to play in that forum with creative and talented people was a real opportunity and gift.

The film will first open in Japan on June 30, which is part of why Sony began the film's press tour there. But still, this is getting things rolling pretty early. The Amazing Spider-Man doesn't hit the States until July 3.

Back in 2010, Elizabeth Banks was cast as the lead role in Tink, Disney's live-action feature centered around Peter Pan's beloved fairy sidekick Tinkerbell. At the time, we knew only that the energetic Banks seemed like perfect casting for the character, but we got a better idea of what to expect from the project when Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Fright Night) signed on to pen the rewrite last fall. Noxon likened the film to Disney's Enchanted, and now Banks is comparing Tink to another popular fish-out-of-water tale — Jon Favreau's modern holiday favorite Elf. Read Banks' comments after the jump.

During a recent interview with MovieHole, Banks offered up some details on Tink and its central character:

It's a live action Tinkerbell movie sort of in the vein of Elf in which I would play Tinkerbell. Tinkerbell gets thrown out of Never Never Land, and it's about where she goes and who she meets and the adventures she has…. Tinkerbell is one of the greatest characters because she's mischievous and snarky and fun and sexy and jealous and vengeful.

The comparisons to Elf and Enchanted suggest we'll be getting a film that's funny and sweet in equal measure, but both of those movies centered around painfully innocent characters trying to make sense of a cynical universe. Banks' description of Tinkerbell as "snarky" and "vengeful" makes her sound rather edgier than either Buddy or Giselle, no?

In her earlier comments, Noxon praised the project's gender politics:

I'm doing a re-write on Elizabeth Banks as Tinkerbell, kind of in the Enchanted world. It's about her coming to the real world in a non-fairy form. That's about all I can say about it, but part of my attraction to that was what we were talking about earlier [the aforementioned gender politics].

It's hard to write or even find a movie for eight- or nine-year-old girls that isn't about, ya' know, "I need a boyfriend!" I mean, Tinkerbell has a job! She's one of the few characters in that fantasy world that actually has a job. I have a seven-year-old daughter and I want more movies for her where afterward I don't have to make something up like, "You know, the job of running a kingdom is really hard work, and she and the Prince are going to have to communicate a lot…"

Overall, it sounds like Tinkerbell is shaping up to be a welcome example of a strong, complicated female character, and I'm eager to see what Banks and Noxon will make of her. That is, if Tink ever gets off the ground. Banks, who's also producing along with McG and Adam Shankman, was careful to stress to MovieHole that the project was still in its early stages at this point.

"We're in script stage and everybody is really excited and blah, blah, doesn't mean anything," she said. "You might as well not even write it down because who knows, it might not even happen."

As someone who was almost the same age as the central characters when the first American Pie was released in 1999, I am totally, unironically excited to see the East Great Falls crew together again for American Reunion, even as I suspect I'll find the franchise has lost some of its charm over the past decade. Still, the marketing so far has been pretty solid, and I'm thrilled to see that even as some things have changed — they're no longer virgins, for one — others have remained exactly the same.

The new international trailer sees returning stars Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, Tara Reid, John Cho, Eugene Levy, and Jennifer Coolidge all coming back home for the all-important high school reunion, while franchise newcomers Dania Ramirez and Katrina Bowden make appearances as well. The first half of the trailer is identical to the previously released green-band one, but we get a few new scenes in the second half — including one of Stifler using an icebox as a toilet. If you were at all concerned that the older, wiser gang wouldn't be able to recreate the juvenile shenanigans of the original Pie, that should put your worries to rest.

Directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay), American Pie opens April 6.

Synopsis:

In the comedy American Reunion, all the American Pie characters we met a little more than a decade ago are returning to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. In one long-overdue weekend, they will discover what has changed, who hasn't and that time and distance can't break the bonds of friendship. It was summer 1999 when four small-town Michigan boys began a quest to lose their virginity. In the years that have passed, Jim and Michelle married while Kevin and Vicky said goodbye. At first glance, Martin Ansin is an unlikely choice to make Mondo posters for TRON. His work, such as the recent poster for Dracula, a sought after Star Trek Space Seed piece or his wholey unique take on Star Wars, are all extremely realistic and defined, two traits that certainly don't describe Disney's sci-fi franchise. Then you look about the wide-ranging scope of Ansin's subjects and it's obvious that his clean style can breath life into just about anything. It's part of the reason why his art, much like Olly Moss and Tyler Stout before him, is becoming more and more sought after on a daily basis.

/Film is proud to exclusively debut the latest collaboration between Disney, Mondo and Sideshow Collectibles: a limited edition posters set (yes, it's a paired set) of posters for TRON and TRON:Legacy by Martin Ansin. Check them both out and find out when you can buy them after the jump.

Both glow in the dark (!) posters are 24 x 36 inch screenprints with UV varnish and come in paired editions of 390. They will only be sold as sets and cost $90 for both.

This is the second TRON set Mondo has done (but third TRON poster overall) and while each is totally different, the movies are so visually stunning that all the interpretations kind of work perfectly. Eric Tan's set is boxy and symetrical while Ansin's are more humanistic and layered. Either of those descriptions can perfectly describe TRON too.

2012 is already shaping up to be the biggest year yet of Adam Brody's post-OC career, as the actor books two more high-profile roles. One is Some Girls, a feature adaptation of Neil LaBute's recent play about an almost-married man who travels across the country to visit his ex-girlfriends. It is unclear from Variety's story whether or not LaBute will be directing the film himself.

But Brody's next project will likely be Rob Meltzer's Welcome to the Jungle, as that project will shoot next month in Puerto Rico. The story centers around a design firm that goes on retreat to a tropical island, only to become stranded and see Lord of the Flies-style chaos break out. Brody will play the protagonist, who must save his colleagues from a power-hungry leader. Brody's only one of a rather eclectic cast that also includes Rob Huebel, Dennis Haysbert, Kristen Schaal, and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Brody is currently filming Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman's Lovelace, in which he plays porn star Harry Reems opposite Amanda Seyfried's Linda Lovelace. This year also sees him starring in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Whit Stillman's Damsels in Distress, the indie dramedy Revenge for Jolly!, and last year's TIFF entry The Oranges.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Chloe Moretz will play father and daughter in The Rut, from Girlfight helmer Karyn Kusama. Morgan has just boarded the picture, whereas Moretz has been attached since 2010. The two previously starred together in last year's Texas Killing Fields.

The new Kevin Caruso-penned drama follows a young woman (Moretz) who ventures alone into the wilderness to hunt deer in order to win her father's approval. The Hollywood Reporter describes the film as "Winter's Bone meets Into the Wild," though another film that springs to mind for me is Joe Wright's Hanna.

Kusama first broke out in 2000 with the boxing drama Girlfight, but her past two films (Aeon Flux and Jennifer's Body) have been critical and commercial disappointments. Here's hoping she can turn it around with The Rut, which is tentatively scheduled for an October start.

Each year American Cinema Editors (ACE) recognizes the best editing of the year in narrative film, documentary and television through the Eddie Awards. The nominations for achievement in 2011 have been released. They include a couple of expected films such as Hugo and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and feature a couple other inclusions that might count as surprises to some.

This list comes from the ACE press release about this year's Eddies. In this case, I like that there are feature film categories for dramatic and comedy/musical efforts; not that editing one or the other is more difficult, but editing is such a core component of comedy and musical films, and one that so often goes unheralded and even unexamined, that it deserves a moment in the sun.

Looking at the documentary selections, I was at first disappointed not to see Senna included, but it is possible the film wasn't eligible for consideration.
